Can't play music in car via usb after iOS 8 update

Hi, After the IOS8 Update and (now the 8.0.2 update) I'm not longer able to play music via the usb lead (OK via BlueTooth still), I have a Mazda 6, I get 'iPod Error' on the screen after it tries to read the phones music. It's not the lead, I've tried several and its not the car head unit as it still works on a device using IOS7 (as my phone did).

The case is with Mac but interested if anyone has any ideas/suggestions.

I wondering if it's something to do with 'Air play'?. Was there anything done to Airplay on the IOS8 update?

Apple tell me there is no reason for it not to work, nothing on the IOS8 update should effect the music via usb but it doesn't work.

Cheers

100drh,

Have you reported this to Apple?

I got the impression when I did my report that Apple wanted to lay the blame with Mazda and even sent me a link to a support group who were moaning about the Mazda console.

Fortunately the guy I was talking to on the Apple support 'chat' was good enough to believe my answers to his questions and put a 'ticket in' for the issue.

Good to hear I'm not the only one with the problem but sad that we have it in the first place!

Cheers

I have a 2010 GMC terrrain and Iphone 6 with ATT. When I first got it worked fine or well at least I was able to use it as an Ipod when I connected it to the USB slot. However, when I upgraded it to 8.1.3 it stopped working, when I connected it literary says "media not supported". The funny part is that my wife has an iPhone 5 with Tmobile and she upgraded it to the same software version and it works perfectly. I do not know if Apple or ATT is telling me "you need to upgrade your car" or something like "your phone is to new for this old car". I am flabbergasted , does anyone have any suggestions .....

Apple could fix this problem if they cared enough. However, I think it's up to Mazda or other companies to keep up with tech updates as their cars get increasingly loaded with technology based systems. I tried all the tricks and workarounds, but had no luck. That makes me mad since I've got a fairly new iPhone 5s, and a new Mazda CX-5. How, they don't like to play together. It might take enough people leaving Apple for Samsung due to this issue (making sure they know this is why) to make Apple do something about it. However, i feel too invested in Apple stuff to switch at this time.

Anyway, I just stumbled upon this:

http://infotainment.mazdahandsfree.com/howto-findaphone?language=en-US

EVen though it's labeled as 'pairing' and 'handsfree', if you put in your phone and carrier info, it lets you know all of the compatibility between the Mazda and the phone. After doing this, it's obvious that my phone's only USB compatibility with my car is to charge. This is not okay, as the Mazda salesman told me all about how I could have SMS access on the system. It even says on this site that Bluetooth doesnt allow repeat or shuffle - the later which is a joke if you have over 5000 songs on your iPhone.

The Mazda tech help people are either morons or liars, as it's clear that there are many compatibility issues with Apple products. Both Apple and Mazda could figure out how to fix these issues if they'd work together. I'll consider switching phones long before cars, so I hope Apple can get things figured out so I dont have to dump them.

I this info is useful to others in a similar situation, who also didn't have any luck with workaround tricks.

I spoke to several different people at Honda on my Accord and even worked up the chain of command and was told point blank that Apple refuses to help automakers make the products compatible with the USB links. From reading the posts that Honda, GMC and Mazda are all having the same problem then it lays with Apple and not in my case Honda. Look at it this way a new Droid or equivalent phone is less then $300.00 or so a new car $30,000 plus. I'll get a new brand of phone before buying another new car. But at least I am not the only one frustrated with Apples ethics.

So I think I figured it out! This worked for me anyways and I really hope it works for you too.

I was trying to use Slacker Radio, my car didn't recognize my device as a media player. I accidentally loaded an audio book onto it and BAM! My car started playing the audio book! I tried my Slacker and Amazon radio and it worked as well. I borrowed the audio book from my library so I knew it would be gone soon so I just put a sound bite on it, just a simple chime and it still works.

Also when you plug your phone in and iTunes comes up, click on "manually manage music and videos" under options under summary.

These two things made me love my iPhone and Apple all over again.

Best of luck!

P.S. I have a 2011 Honda CR-Z just in case you were wondering what car I use my phone with.

Also, I stream music through the lightning cable, my car has a USB port for iPod's and thumb drives...

I've been getting iPod Error messages since the upgrade to iOS 8. But since going to iOS 8.3 I can no longer select any music file to listen to. These 'upgrade' bugs are extremely frustrating as I have to constantly handle the phone to make any changes versus driving the vehicle which is not only dangerous but potentially liable. I suggest anyone reading this to send in feedback to complain:

Alternatively you can try emailing (although I'm not sure if it will work) the head of iOS development at federighi@apple.com. Another option is to make an appointment at an Apple store and see if they come out to see your problem in your car. If you can get your hands on an iOS 7 device you can show them how it works on iOS 7 but not iOS 8..or alternatively video tape it to show them.

I have the same issue everyone else has, my iphone was playing music just fine prior to this update. if someone tried to reach apple and they stated that the manufacturers problem, as I see it there should be a lawsuit for this. People pay for iPhones and for music, it is expensive and for it to not work in your car is the companies problem. i have read the comments and It Is not fair so something needs to be done
