Another bootcamp snafu after OSX update; please help.

Early 2014 27" iMac, i7, 3T Fusion Drive, 32G RAM, OSX & Win8.1

Problem: I updated OSX and after that I was unable to boot into Windows8.1x64 via BootCamp. I am able to run my Windows installation via Parallels (10) and I can see the Bootcamp dialogue if I request it on startup. If I try to boot into Windows either from OSX or from Bootcamp I get the following message (paraphrased): Your PC needs to be repaired, Error code 0x000000e . Any command attempted / repair attempted whether from thumbdrive or HDD loopsback to the same message. Only with a hard reboot can I return to OSX. Attempts to recover the entire drive from an Acronis 2014 sector-by-sector image created before the update fail.

My level of expertise is low.

I decided to post a question after reviewing the following excellent threads here:

Repairing Boot Camp after creating new partition

"No bootable device --- insert boot disk and press any key" after setting up Bootcamp

I believe I can follow them, but have not tried the solutions yet because I don't want to screw the machine up and the results of queries I make are a little different than their examples.

I include below the results of my queries beneath and thank anyone in advance for their help.

On a Fusion drive, Windows can be installed only on the HDD part using a non-EFI Bootcamp method.

Please post the output of

diskutil cs list

sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk1 (This is where your Bootcamp installation is).

sudo fdisk /dev/disk1

Apart from TM (/dev/disk9) and a 4GB (/dev/disk3) Flash drive(?), what are these other drives (/dev/disk4 - /dev/disk9)?

If you have created an additional partition on WinSTOR after Bootcamp was installed, that can be problematic as well.

OK, so I am back in command-opt-R recovery, the partitions are as they were (SSD splIt in 2 journaled/FreeSpace ; HDD split in 2 FAT / journaled). What now? I don't know how to rebuild the fusion drive for Yosemite to be reinstalled on. Once that is done I think/hope I can do the rest as it is a Windows install!

Loner T - I am still working on getting this machine as I want it. I've run into a few little surprises with trying to get it to do *everything* I want, which may not be possible. But your help through the other night was incredible and I really appreciate it. From that point forward at least I understood (I think) how to go back to square one, apply first principles, and experiment further. I've managed to do that successfully a few times when things haven't shaken out quite as I expected. I am very grateful. If and when I get it working exactly as I wish, I will let you know my solution.

Incidentally, the only issue with your 2x2 setup is that I cannot restore my previous Windows configuration directly into it because it required two partitions instead of one (if there was a Windows fusion drive...sigh). I figured that if I can manage a restore then I ought to and save the substantial config time. And if I cannot...then I may as well experiment and learn as much as I can. The machine is under warranty, after all!

I am not sure what you are implying by restoring "previous" configuration of Windows. Can you provide a bit more detail of what this configuration looks like? Are you trying to "restore" from a previous Windows image backup?

Oct 25, 2014 7:46 PM in response to Loner T

I would like to restore Windows as it was rather than spending time reinstalling and configuring everything. The old configuration was a plain vanilla Bootcamp one, so the fusion drive was partitioned by bootcamp and then I partitioned the Windows partition further from within win81 to ensure I didn't cross the 2T barrier with the OS partition. Despite this, I had installed and stored everything on the OS partition, and I couldn't do that with Windows on ~60G of the SSD. I also couldn't restore the partition from backup (Acronis True Image, so yes it's an image of sorts) in that amount of space. That's all I was getting at. During my experimentation I have found that while Parallels will work with both OS' on respective SSD partitions, it does some very funny things to Windows, and if you tell it to treat Windows as if Bootcamp is installed it does some even funnier things impacting stability, so I am still working on the right setup for my needs. I would just stuff in a bigger SSD along with the HDD and that would solve the issue and allow me to go with the ideal setup you showed me, but Apple says that will void my warranty And they won't even do it tfor me hemselves; they suggested I buy a new iMac to replace this one that's not even a year old!

Changing the hardware may void your warranty. My suggestion is to look at tools from Acronis and see if parts can be restore in different parts of the system. If not, the this TruImage is essentially a "snapshot" in time, which does not allow selective restores. You may be better off if you do a clean setup.

LT,

I haven't yet had time to deal with it, but I would be surprised if the Acronis software can restore applications to different drives and have everything working since I believe that would require the registry to be changed during the process.

The problem with a clean install is...time. It would take a very long time to get it all up and running as it was, and it's a last resort. The fact that it no longer seems possible to use Parallels in the configuration you suggested is likewise a bit of a problem. I use Windows 95% of the time, but being able to run the same installation with Parallels when in OSX the other 5% of the time is extremely useful

Installing Windows 8.1 is not and never was a problem. Getting the configuration back as it was prior to the OSX update is the problem. It's not simply a matter of installing Windows any old place ahead of the 2T barrier on the HDD, it's a matter of getting the Windows partition to the front of the HDD and also having enough rom for all necessary applications, and a modicum of local storage for both OS'. Your method will work fine for those wanting to casually run win81 on an iMac, even with the abomination that is a fusion drive. It's not especially useful for people who want to be able to do intensive work with the maximum capabilities of the machine, using both OS' independently and/or together, and not have a profusion of small partitions. But thank you for the response - all help is always appreciated.

The installation of Windows on the SSD part does not preclude using Parallels. You will have only four partitions, SSD (1 and 2) and HDD (1 and 2). If there is a method to make your software re-installation go any faster, it should be pursued. Getting the file systems and the OSes installed is relatively easier task, compared to installing the applications you might have.

Please do what is right for you. I will do my best to assist.

LT, if your attitude is to be so kind as to make an offer of further help so I can get what I believe is the optimal setup, it would be churlish and stupid to do otherwise. I shall reinstall as you suggested before, and install the applications afresh, and request help as I go. Thank you again, I will begin tomorrow.
