iTunes play counts broken under iOS8

Since updating my iPhone 4s to iOS8, play counts are rocketing up much faster than the actual number of plays when I sync with iTunes on the Mac.

There's a good description of the problem affecting iTunes for Windows here:

Itunes playcount too high

But it also affects iTunes for Mac, and it's only started happening since the iOS8 update, which leads me to think it's an iOS8 issue - I presume iTunes is just showing (correctly) the (incorrect) number of plays the phone is passing to it during each sync. It seems to be the iOS8 Music app that's wrongly over-incrementing the play counts for each track it plays.

It's effectively broken iTunes/the iPhone music app for me, as I have a load of nested playlists on iTunes which use play count as a key parameter, and I sync the phone to it each day to automatically give me a new mix of music to take to work. Now those playlists have stopped working as intended because the phone is providing incorrect play count data.

I have the same problem. I performed a test and it seems the play count gets updated now every time you play a track on your iOS device, even if it's only for a few seconds. It used to be (pre-iOS8) that it would only updated if you reached the end of a track. The 'Last Played'-field seems the have retained that functionality (it show the last time you've reached the end of the song.)

Hoping Apple will fix this problem soon.

Is there any way to file a bug report with them ?

It seems they only read these support forums occasionally.

Since they are actually only for customers helping each other.

There have been other disasters with iOS updates and play counts in the past, but this one certainly takes the cake.

The only solution I can offer, which has worked for me, is to remove all of your music from your iPhone after every sync - then reapply it. This is both a tedious and time-consuming process, but it ensures you don't get the duplication which has been outlined above and in several other threads.

I have essentially given up on using my iPhone and iPad for playing music for the time being, removing all my music from each device, and electing to return to my trusty iPod Classic for playing music, while Apple get their head around the problem before applying a fix.

The new iOS was great in that music lyrics returned to some sense of normalcy (removal of unnecessary line breaks) although the text is a little too large for my liking.

dalmanac - I forgot I had an old iPod Touch in a drawer from before I bought my iPhone. I removed all my music from the phone, and added it to the Touch instead, and now everything's working fine. The Touch can't upgrade past iOS6 which means it ACTUALLY WORKS PROPERLY, and the music app can still play podcasts which is a nice bonus.

It's ridiculous that I've had to revert to a four year old device running a two year old OS to be able to play music properly, but there you are.

I'm due a new phone upgrade very soon, and I was going to replace my 4s with a 5s, but now I'm having serious second thoughts about buying another Apple phone. Moving all my music over to another platform would be a major hassle of course - but major hassle is what I'm getting from my Apple products at the moment. I've always been happy to pay the "Apple premium", and encouraged plenty of others to, on the basis that it all "just works". I'm far from convinced that's still true.

Hi hullaballoo

Essentially,

1. Remove all music from your iOS8 device.

2. Sync the music you want to play onto it.

3. Play music.

4. Sync it and the play counts should update fine (this is based on one play of each song, not multiple plays between syncs, I haven't tested that).

Repeat the process.

In the weeks since this problem was first identified, I have done this sparingly and have used my iPod Classic with no problems. The positive is that I am listening to a lot of old stuff I haven't listened to in a couple of years, so that's pretty cool.

Unfortunately this didn't work for me. When you say remove the music from the iOS8 device what method are you using? I just unchecked Music in iTunes and then did a sync saw no music on the iPhone and then did a sync with what I wanted to listen to and only listened once and it added a ton of plays like it had been doing before. There are specific songs that are doing it so I tried it on those and the remove everything and add didn't work unless I'm not removing the right way or something....but I kind of doubt it.

iOS 8.1 is being released Monday and if that doesn't fix it, I really don't know what the next step will be. My iOS 7 iPad (4th Generation) syncs plays just fine but I bought a 128GB iPhone for the purpose of holding a lot of music...any other suggestions in more detail for workarounds is appreciated!

iOS 8.1 hasn't fixed it.

There are quite a few people bothered about this over in the iTunes for Windows forum:

Re: Itunes playcount too high

I can only assume that nobody at Apple uses smart playlists based on play counts, and that the few of us customers that do aren't making enough noise for them to notice.

My employer is providing me with a new (non-Apple) smartphone very soon. I'll go through the (minor) hassle of getting my iTunes music onto that and see if it updates play counts correctly. If it does, I won't be spending my own cash on another iPhone that doesn't. Way to unstick your sticky customers Apple!
