All disk icons stack in same place

I just installed Tiger last week, and I've noticed that every time I put in a CD, DVD, etc. or download or mount a disk image, it appears on the desktop in the same place - the lower right hand corner of the screen.
That's fine, if there's nothing else there, but I keep getting 3 or 4 different icons all stacked up there in the same place. (Had 5 today, because I had downloaded 2 dmg files and mounted them, plus had a CD in.)

Is there some way to fix this?

Thanks,

Go to your desktop, make sure just the desktop is visible - not a Finder window and hit command j (or go up to View/View Options).

Click on Snap to Grid if you want to move them manually and they will all space out evenly. Or click on Keep Arranged By... then select the order you want from the popup menu and they will snap to the grid as well but only in the sorting order you chose.

But one warning, if you have too many icons and the desktop gets filled it will again start piling extras on top of one another when it runs out of room. You'll have to remove files or make the icons smaller.

Hi, EagleSongs. Welcome to the Discussions.

1. Increase the size of the icons on your desktop. Try something in the 30+ pixel range. This problem was fairly common under Panther and seems to happen if the icons are very small. Click your desktop then select Finder > View > Show View Options and select a larger icon size with the slider.

2. Use the shareware application Cocktail to remove the .DS_Store file from your Home > Desktop folder. The .DS_Store files files contain data used by Finder to display the folder window, such as View Options, icon positions, and window position.
1. Download and install the shareware application Cocktail. Be sure to use the latest, Tiger-specific version.

2. Launch Cocktail.

3. Click Files in the Cocktail toolbar.

4. Click the DS Store tab.

5. Click Chose.

6. In the resulting window navigate to, and select, your Home > Desktop folder.

7. Click Choose.

8. Click Delete in the resulting confirmation dialog.

Cocktail will delete the .DS_Store file in your Home > Desktop folder, then displays a sheet indicating when it has completed the task.
Good luck!
