Battery Drains in iOS 8.0.2 iPhone 5s

Yesterday i updated my iPhone 5s to iOS 8.0.2, since then my battery has drained really fast its gone from 100% to 80% in 10 minutes. I called Apple support and they ran a diagnostic test on the phone but nothing showed up.Does anyone have any solutions to why this is happening?, i always force close the apps after i finish using them so i honestly don't know why this is happening. Is it just iOS 8? if so can it be resolved in the next Apple software update?

I have an Exchange account too, and Exchange has a long history of causing iPhone batteries to drain fast. A quick Google search for "exchange account iphone battery drain" returns a bunch of related articles dating back to iOS 6.1. Here is a good article that might help you resolve the issue: http://snnyc.com/2013/09/exchange-drain/ According to the article, "...virtually every instance of heat + battery drain + runaway data use that I’ve personally witnessed has been the result of a sudden-onset problem syncing a Microsoft Exchange calendar. When an iOS device encounters an error syncing an Exchange calendar, it simply retries. In fact, it retries every couple of seconds or so, nonstop, 24 hours a day, forever if you let it. Unfortunately this is nothing new." The article said the issue persisted after 7, and apparently 8.1 didn't fix it either. The author of the article recommends that iPhone users "simply navigate to your Exchange account settings, turn your Calendars off, and then turn them back on. While one step, “Delete from My iPhone”, sounds ominous, you’ll get your calendar entries back when you re-sync with the server." I think I did that step when I was tinkering with the calendars. Hopefully that will help you and everyone else with the battery drain and heat issues.

Actually, I think I was reluctant to delete my MS Exchange Work email account, so all I did was go to Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Work (my MS Exchange email account) and then turned Calendars off and clicked "Delete from my iPhone". Then, when I turned my work calendar back on, all my calendar entries re-synched onto my phone. That way I didn't need to set up my work account from scratch. It worked for me.

It was a good thought, I definitely agree about first suspecting Exchange!

Well after further testing I'm still having severe battery drain on my iPhone and am not having much success at tracking it down. Especially since others here mention not using mail or iCloud. I have some co-workers that also have fast draining batteries after the IOS 8 update and one of them doesn't use iCloud either.

I did make an interesting discovery this morning. I brought my personal laptop to work and in trying to get the wifi connected I noticed that my iPhone was broadcasting as an available "Personal Hotspot" despite that feature being turned OFF in the settings. I was able to connect to it while it was OFF on my iPhone and as soon as it connected it was switched ON. I wonder if this constant Hotspot broadcast while OFF might have something to do with my battery drain? My iPhone is my personal little hand warmer ever since installing IOS8!

Anyone else see this odd Personal Hotspot behavior?

The new hot spot feature is advertised via Bluetoot, not Wi-Fi. The hot spot itself is via Wi-Fi but the advertisement is part of the Continuity/Handoff features introduced in iOS 8 and OS 10.10.

The way you can verify that hot spot is not being advertised via Wi-Fi is to see if any other non-Yosemite computer in the office can see this hot spot. My guess is that they won't.

I would delete the apps you are not using. It's likely one of obscure apps that is causing the drain.

I do notice reduced battery life with iOS 8.x, but nothing as dramatic as people describe here. I have two iPhone 5s.

Ahh thanks for the info, you're indeed correct. I shut off bluetooth in my laptop and the iPhone hotspot disappeared. So I then turned off bluetooth in my iPhone and it was dead by this afternoon, I thought that might help.

Not sure if you saw my earlier posts but mine drains like crazy even with a freshly restored as new iPhone, no 3rd party apps. As soon as I put my iCloud account on my phone it becomes a wonderful hand warmer.

I discounted the iCloud cause as others here have posted they don't have iCloud accounts.

Dreading to use 5s after upgrading to IOS 8. Tried disabling every feature available but it does not solve battery drain issue. Even normal usage does not improve battery efficiency and the most horrible experience is even with the iphone switched off totally, it drains at the same faster pace and that is a nightmare. What is the use to have an iphone which cannot be used even normally without any function. Apple has to come up with a solution to reach out to their customer base.

After noticing that my location services keeps popping up, I did some further investigating. Previously, I had shut off location services for everything I didn't really need it for, and kept the stuff that seemed convenient. I turned off Share My Location, I shut off all of the system services except motion calibration, compass, and find my iphone. I limited ad tracking, turned off tracking in safari. I've been using my phone for about half an hour, listening to music and playing a quick game or two....and I'm still at 100%

I've found this article really helpful with finding thing to shut off

I have my fingers crossed that this will work, but I'll update later if I see more improvement

No matter what I do, cannot put brakes on the battery drain of my iphone 5S. Disabled almost every application and feature but its getting much worse. Not even can be used as normal phone by limiting to making and receiving calls. Imagine, even when the device is on switch off mode, the drain is at the same pace. Apple has to fix this issue at the earliest possible time.

Not any solution here but confirmation that this is a MAJOR issue. I have 3 company 5s phones .... ALL started draining tremendously fast once we upgraded to iOS 8.x.x.... tried every solution listed and nothing works. One phone never gets used for most of the day, simply unplugged and left in a pocket, desk or drawer until afternoon, and by 3 pm the battery is at 0% - no calls, no texts, no email, nothing. I also have 1 5s that we didn't upgrade to iOS 8 and that battery lasts 2-3 days. My daughter and her husband also have 5s phones and both started draining battery life after the upgrade to iOS 8. My phone has become almost unusable as I am charging it 3-4 times a day to keep it charged.... it was at 60% battery by 10 am this morning. I have been an mac user since 1987 ... yes, my first computer and I am about ready to pitch the iPhone in favor of a Samsung unless this gets addressed by Apple fast! I can't run a business with phones that function like this!!

I noticed today that my location services were in use even though I wasn't using any apps that needed them at the time. I forced shut all my apps, but location services were still being used. Then I noticed a badge was displaying on the Redbox app, indicating I had an unread message. I opened the Redbox app and read the message that was waiting. When I closed it, the badge went away and location services was no longer in use. If you have the Redbox app, it may be the cause of some or all of the battery drain.

Same issue as everyone else, my battery drains from 30% and then the phone shuts off showing no battery charge. I restart and then my phone shows 28% battery. It has done this at 50% charge! There is no predicting when my phone will shut off, I have an iphone 5s and obviously Apple has not fixed this issue and NEEDS TOO!! I can't stand Apples updates anymore they are not trust worthy and acting like Microsoft by sending out a product that doesn't work and then trying to patch it later. SAD SAD.

Apple please release a statement at least acknowledging there is an issue and you are trying to resolve it!!

I too have an iphone 5s 64K. Up till updating to ios8.x.x it was a model phone and it appeared battery usage was optimised. Since updating, the phone drains at incredible rates, up to 40% in an hour.If I do not use it at all, the charge appears to hold. The moment I start using it, more often than not in a wifi situation the charge can go down the 40% in a an hour and it keeps discharging and heating. Turning off location services does not help. All background apps that can be seen are off. Last night I left it charging and when I woke up it was only on 97%, like it had been working while charging.

Apple, you have joined Microsoft. We Apple users thought that we had a strong product and it was only Microsoft that released bug full products. Congratulations, Apple, you have joined their ranks and are not even doing anything about it. Time to move to a Samsung or are they just as bad? Just for the record my daughter's iPhone 5s running ios 7.x.x. is absolutely fine!!! Please fix this. We are loyal customers, be loyal suppliers!

@DE9 - Since it happens with location services turned off, it could be the calendar and mail are constantly syncing. If you haven't already, you might want to go to Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> and then turn Calendars, mail, contacts and reminders off for all your accounts. Click "Delete from my iPhone" for all of them. Don't worry, when you turn them back on, your data will re-sync onto your phone. After deleting the data, turn each account back on, one by one, letting each one sync fully before moving to the next. Hopefully that will help.
