Q: My bluetooth doesn't answer calls correctly with iOS 8 on the iPhone 4s

My Bluetooth earphone isn't answering calls correctly using iOS 8.0.2 on the iPhone 4s. I believe this was happening with the original release of iOS 8, but I thought it just needed to be paired again or the phone rebooted. Unfortunately neither has solved the issue. My Bluetooth answers the calls, but immediately cuts off and sends the call to the iPhone 4s. All other Bluetooth features seem to work fine, such as with Siri, voice dialing, outgoing calls, etc.. If I reconnect the Bluetooth after I'm on an incoming call, it works fine as well.

    Hey there Falcon24c,

It sounds like you are unable to use this one bluetooth accessory with the phone reliably despite having already restarted the phone, and re-paired the device with the phone. I would use the followng article for additional troubleshooting recommendations. Just go from top to bottom and try the steps you haven't done in order.

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

    Cheers,

    Sterling

Since upgrading to ios8 on iPhone 4s, I am having a number of bluetooth issues with my motorcycle headset.

    1) I can no longer answer an incoming call by pressing the connect button on the headset, however, i can make outgoing calls ok (initiated using Siri).

    2) I am unable to terminate a call by pressing the connect/disconnect button.

The headset "connect button" is still working ok for starting/stopping music and other functions - it just seems to be phone call related.

Is anyone else using a motorcycle headset having similar issues? (Mine is a generic Aldi set which I have been using for years)

I actually ordered a new identical Bluetooth headset (Motorola H730), and have the identical problem. I am convinced this problem is with iOS 8, com'on Apple fix this or let us go back to iOS7! There are so many other bugs in iOS 8 as well. It's so choppy too. What a waste of an update. Big regret!

I am having the same issue.  It worked before I upgraded to ios8 - did you resolve it?

It is not that the phone doesn't pair with my car's bluetooth.  It drops calls and switches them back to the phone rather than answering through the bluetooth.  I went to Nissan today and one of the salesman tried it as well.  Then we tried it with his phone and it worked perfectly - so it is not the car.  AND my iphone worked before I upgraded to ios8.

    Hope that this is helpful.

No not yet. It's still very frustrating to say the least. It's definitely something iOS 8 related, not a problem with the Bluetooth device or connection.

Thank you sterling r, but the problem is not with the connection between the Bluetooth device and my phone. As others have stated, all other features seem to work fine, it's specifically when answering or terminating calls with the Bluetooth device, that there's a problem. When answering calls, it's as if I answered by the phone. I then need to press the answer button again on the Bluetooth to connect to the call. Trying to terminate the call using the Bluetooth device does nothing. I need to end calls from the phone. I've been using the same line of Motorola H7XX Bluetooth devices for years, and have never experienced anything even remotely close to this problem. This all first started happening immediately after upgrading to iOS 8. The Bluetooth works fine on other phones that are not running iOS 8.

I followed the first step in the Troubleshooting document - took off the case, made the connection with the bluetooth in my car - and restarted the phone - and lo and behold, it now works..  I haven't tried it again but I will later today..

In my last post I said that I can use my Bluetooth to connect to a call by pressing the answer button a second time. I just wanted to clarify, that only works if i completely disconnect/power off (not re-pair) the Bluetooth device first. If I just press it again after the call is (wrongly) transferred to the phone, it will terminate the call. Also, I can end the call while using the Bluetooth. I had stated I couldn't in my last post. No fix as of today.

I was hoping the latest iOS 8.1 update would fix this issue, but it hasn't. I have however narrowed my issue down to a particular area. My Bluetooth earpiece (Motorola H730) has a folding "boom", which when closed, disconnects the Bluetooth connection to the iPhone 4S. Prior to iOS 8, to answer a call I could simply open the boom, and it would connect to the call perfectly. After the iOS 8 upgrade, opening the boom sends the call to the phone. If I then press the connect button on the earpiece, it terminates the call that was sent to the phone. To connect to the call I now have two options: 1.) Close the boom and reopen it.  2.) Press the "connection" icon on the phone and select the Motorola H730 from the list. By "connection" I'm referring to the same icon that you would use to switch to speakerphone mode. If the boom is already open and has a connection to the phone prior to receiving a call, I can answer a call successfully on the H730 by pressing the connect button on it. I certainly prefer to once again be able to successfully answer an incoming call with it by simply opening the boom. I hope this clears up this issue a bit, and that this change will be reverted back in a future iOS 8 update.

sterling r - senseless canned responses like yours are what gives apple support a snobbish bad name.

I noticed the same problems on 8.0 and 8.1.  7.0 devices still worked correctly.  Doing a bit of research, I found this workaround on MacRumours:

Settings -> General -> Accessibility ->Call Audio Routing -> change to Headset (default is Automatic).

Unfortunately this will no longer automatically send audio to the phone when answered there so long as the headset is present.  Here's hoping for a fix soon.

That document provides absolutely no information for solving the issue at hand.

Hi, same problem for me with i6, iOS 8.1.2 and bluetoot headset Jabra BT2050

Answering an incoming call with Jabra (switching it on or pressing the button) will use the the iPhone headphone (and not the Jabra). I'll have to manual select the audio source to continue the call using the bluetoot Jabra. Seems just a little "bug", but very annoying and dangerous for safety (just imagine answering when driving a car)
