Itunes wont import Artist Info

When I insert CD itunes uses info from CDDB directory and comes up with all info Song name , artist, album etc.

When I then import the cd to my mac it fails to import metadata such as artist name . It only imports the song and Title ?

It is impossible for me to add all of this info manually and the weird thing is it sees all info when I insert CD so why doesn't the itunes import see all info ?

So just to clarify my import settings are WAV 44.1k 16bit "Custom"

This is a screenshot while CD is inserted

And after ripping CD this is what it looks like

As you can see no info has come across other than "Name"

Also when the CD is not inserted I do not have the option to get CD info. When i right click on individual songs and get info it says.

Thanks Guys some really helpful info here. Ill keep working at it. I am a sound engineer and need to reference the files uncompressed. Saying that you have given me some good clues. I also work with Wavelab which prefers WAV. Just to clarify when using WAVs all tags are stored in one of these files ?User uploaded file

If I look at the files in the music library and not the new playlist all tags are there.

AIFF is uncompressed. (but you knew that...)

Dunno if it would be too much work but you could import them as AIFF (so all tags are there) and convert to WAV if you need a WAV file.

Nothing would get lost in the conversion since WAV & AIFF are simply containers for the PCM audio.

Just to clarify when using WAVs all tags are stored in

the iTunes library.itl file.
This is an encrypted/propietary SQLlite database used by iTunes.

Much of this info is also in the iTunes library.xml file.

When I move files from original RIP destination to external drive they drop some tagging info. I get what you are saying , its the nature of the WAV format .

Exactly!

To re-identify an incorrectly identified CD: "Insert the CD and select it in iTunes, then menu Advanced > Get CD track names. It should requery the Gracenote database and let you pick the correct album." - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4101761?answerId=18901866022#18901866022 - Newer versions in upper right hand corner, Options>Get Track Names You can also do this at a later time after ripping the CD: iTunes 11 for Mac: If you don’t see song information - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12280

I think I know what is going on but not why in this particular case. It has to do with WAV format which does not store track information. Rip in just about any format except WAV and you should not have the problem. AIFF is equivalent to WAV but stores track information. ALAC (Apple Lossless) has the benefit of quality but much smaller size.

Try selecting the Album under Music, not in the playlist you created, then see if you can Get CD track names.

Did you edit the songs after you imported them? The track anmes seem to have the disc # & track number also.

Is there some reason you are using WAV?

As Limnos noted, no data is stored with a WAV, except for the file name. This is because WAV has no tags to store data.

All other info is stored in the iTunes database.

Normally when a file is added to iTunes the application makes a metadata note in two places. It saves the information in the iTunes library file (.itl and .xml). It also saves most of the data in the media file itself as tags. So I was a bit surprised when the information wasn't saved at all for your additions because as long as it is the original file in the original location it should save the data in the iTunes library file even though the data isn't in the WAV. It is only if you move the file to a new drive (essentially deleting the old entry) and re-add it to the library that the data won't be carried over. For other file types the information will be preserved because the information travels inside the file and iTunes adds the information it sees to its library.
