I just updated an iPhone 5 to 8.2 from 8.12 and got this can't connect message. The install on the iPhone screen showed it was 2/3 of the way through but when I clicked OK on the iTunes message, the iPhone immediately rebooted on its own and now everything looks normal. It also shows that it has been upgraded to 8.2.

During the install, my iPhone was in airplane mode (I live in a remote area with poor cell reception but ok wi-fi) and has iCloud turned off (yes, I get those stupid warning messages again and again when I turn airplane mode off). I wonder if either or both of those conditions contributed to the mysterious "Can't connect to this iPhone" message.

Hello,

Thank you for your post, I found it helpful (although I couldn't click the star to indicate this--a message window popped up to say "No other users found this helpful"--another bug in the apple)

I have successfully updated two devices (iPhone 5 and iPhone 6 plus) in the last three days and have received the "iTunes could not connect to this iPhone. The session ID is missing." message after each update.

Also, after a successful update, I got a message saying that it couldn't complete the update but the update was completed on my phone. Confusing, time-consuming and frustrating to not have these updates working smoothly after so many months of people reporting this issue.

Hope this information helps others who are having difficult updates.

It's almost a year since your post. I just updated my iPhone 5c to IOS 8.4.1 and I am still getting the "session ID" error message. I get it every time I update my phone. It's frustrating because it's an error message that seems to be incorrect (i.e., there is no real error.) It would be nice if Apple would address this, especially since we're all using Apple products that are supposed to work together seamlessly - Mac, iPhone and iTunes (and even genuine Apple cables, in my case).
