Mighty Mouse Right Click

I have the right button set as "secondary click" on the supplied Mighty Mouse for my brand new iMac. It almost always left clicks. I can take my hand completely off of the mouse and click all over the right side. One click in ten might right click. That's unusable.

Are we talking warranty replacement? I'll hook up my good-old-reliable Logitech while I wait for replies.

Hello,

If you mean that you can have no part of your hand touching any part of the mouse and then push with a single finger (like you're pointing) on the right-click location and it still reads like a left-click, then yes that would be a warranty issue unless the problem is in your OS X configuration / corrupted installation.

But, if you still have your hand holding the side of the mouse, then the side buttons may be detecting your fingers. You don't actually have to press them. They are also touch sensitive. You only need to be near them for them to register. The clicking motion and sound are purely electronic and for appearances only.

My side buttons are so sensitive that I had to disable them because just being near them would trigger them (and tons of others have done the same). This is a standard design issue.

But, the reason this is important, is because even with the side buttons disabled, if it detects my fingers on the side of the mouse, then I can right-click all I want, and it will be registered as a left-click. Basically, side buttons plus right-button equal left-click.

So, if it senses your fingers anywhere near either side button, then your right-click will likely not work. This is a design issue and not a specific defect of a specific mouse. It's a failure in the entire design. So, it's not likely to be covered by warranty.

Mine is so bad that I have to hold the mouse at the rear and keep my fingers away from the side buttons even though they are disabled.

But, like I said, if you mean that you can have no part of your hand touching any part of the mouse and then push with a single finger (like you're pointing) on the right-click location and it still reads like a left-click, then yes I would call and see about getting a replacement.

If the problem is as I described with my experience, then they can send you as many new ones as you like, and they will all do that.

I hope this helps.

Just bought a Mighty Mouse. It seems to understand the difference between right and left clicks just fine if I hold it in my right hand but I'm left-handed, you see. I have to remove my fingers and the heel of my hand from the left side of the mouse completely before it recognises a right-click. This is unacceptable, since the mouse tends to drift as I right-click.

There seems to be a built-in right-handedness in the mouse design. The problem is not in the driver; even under XP right-clicks are not picked up.

Sigh.

Right-handed here. Just a question for personal education. Glor and Jersey chime in also please.
Are you using the MM as it is configured for a right-handed person, but on the left side of the keyboard or have you used the System Perferences/Keyboard & Mouse to reconfigure it to be the opposite or the mirror image of a right-handed mouse? So in the left hand a right click is actually a left click and a left click is actually a right click?

I have just started using a wireless Mighty Mouse. However, the first one that I got would not right-click at all - no matter where I tried clicking on the right-hand side.

I took it back and swapped it for another one - which works perfectly. I do have to keep my index finger about 5 to 10mm above the left-hand side of the mouse or the clicking action results in a left-click. However, as long as I do this, pressing anywhere on the right-hand side produces a righ-click.

So, if you have one that does not work quite right, then try another Might Mouse as once working it is good.

Daniel.

If you have a wired mouse plug that into Your computer. Then turn off Your wireless mouse, open system preference->keyboard and mouse->Bluetooth and make sure Your Wireless mouse name is gone from the name box. Then click to set up new device., then set up mouse, Turn Your Wireless mouse back on, and go through the process of re-introducing Your wireless mouse to Your computer. You should then have Right Click working as it should.

That's what you say now, wait few mins or hours... the right clicking functionality starts to decay until it becomes impossible to right click at all.

I don't know why Apple keeps this mouse on the market despite all these complaints. It is a fact that this mouse has a terrible design flaw and should be considered a defective product.

I am very upset that I have to use my old logitech mouse even though I paid for this brand new wireless Mighty Mouse.

The question is, is Apple going to keep ignoring the problem? or are they going to do something about it?

Well, I must disagree with what has just been written...
Of course, this forum is for getting or offering technical assistance.
But I think when it becomes obvious that there's no technical solution to a problem, you can start complaining. This might get Apple's attention on the problem and decide them to offer a technical/commercial solution to a real problem. And this right-click flaw IS a real problem...
I tried several things, but none helped. I think there has been a shipment of defective Mighty Mice because a lot of older ones I've seen and tried don't show this problem. Besides, the wired mice have the same design except for the wire, and they work flawlessly. So the overall design isn't at fault...
