Should I buy Mac Pro Now or Wait a bit?

I am a mixed user of Macs and windows. My desktop has been a windows machine and my laptop has been an Apple (Powerbook and then MacBook Pro). My windows desktop has now given me enough hardware trouble that I think I will have to switch to a Mac Pro sooner than I had expected. There is also an option that I can wait for another 3-5 months to make that purchase.

My question is, are there any known important issues with current Mac Pro? If so, what are those issues? Does anybody here strongly feels that one should wait for 3-4 months before making a Mac Pro purchase, to let it solve its "teething" problems (if any)?

Thanks much for your feedback.

Probably because it takes time to develop software and compilers to exploit and optimize to use more cores. The Quad G5 is not quite a year old, and applications and OS X are moving toward better optimization. But it is complicated to share memory and resources and have it WORK - and it isn't linear.

The first dual cpu G4s saw maybe 40% boost at times. Dual core and dual cpu was another step. And while they may be highly efficient at lower clock speed, I think there are challenges.

But I also expect to be able to drop something else in the current socket later.

If that is what you want, then wait for 10.5.1 too.

But still, if there is no big problem with waiting 3months...then why not wait?
Since the oct core will most likely not be slower nor more expensive...and after this upgrade it will probably take some time before the next one comes.
Also, at release of oct core, it will ge a 2nd revision, meaning that some of the glitches in the 1st revision will be taken care off, the few that there are that is.

So, even tough I want a Mac now instead of my stupid pc I will wait until xmas...if there is a good reason I shouldn't then please do convice me! =)

Oh...and when it comes to the original persons questions, lets just say this helps u too =)

Well… if you make money from your computer system then you would really be asking this. For instance, assuming a 3 month wait you have approximately 67 working days and at 8 hours work per day and 30€/hour that comes out to 16,080€. Now, if upgrading to a Mac Pro makes only a 10% difference in your productivity that makes the Mac Pro worth 1,462€ in that 3 months. So, having it for that 3 months will pay for over 50% of the cost of a Mac Pro.

Add to that the fact that I, amongst others, will no longer require a PC you will find that buying now actually doesn't really cost anything when compared to the cost of waiting that 3 months.

Whether you think an 8 core system will improve the Mac Pro buy an additional 10% or so above the current 4 core Mac Pro is rather debateable. Remember that for the vast majority of users the cores, on average, run at probably less than 20% utilisation throughout at a day. For some is actually in the signle digits. The value of the Mac Pro is them for those fleeting moments where the core are saturated. For some it's simple a matter of RAM capacity. What other system allows more than 3GB RAM total system for Photosop use let alone being able to allocate 3GB to Photoshop?

Also, at release of oct core, it will ge a 2nd revision, meaning that some of the glitches in the 1st revision will be taken care off, the few that there are that is.

What "glitches" are you actually referring to? Apart from some problems with graphics drivers and Boot Camp, all of which are software problems there's really no endemic problem with the Mac Pro, especially when you compare it to other computer system models.

Good points...
Altough the money making thing doesnt work for me personally when a) A Mac Pro wont increase my efficiency, there are other facts limiting it. The time util I get it might 'only' cause some major outbrakes of the "#¤%@$}*¤ computer" kind. b) I still study and thus I don't make money, the only inderict effect will be on my studies and hence future workplaces.

So, since I cannot see a big loss in waiting for 3 extra months I do not see a point in getting one today. I know that the 4 core would be more then enough for me but if feels a bit 'muffy' to buy a model that would be updated in such a short period of time, and besides, it would make a nice xmas present.

I know that there are none or near to none 'glitches' in the Mac Pro, but if there are some, I hope apple will have sorted them out. The number of 'glitches' should atleast not have increased =) ...or not by that much atleast...

While that might suit you, and from the sounds of it it might be a wise choice for yourself, that does not always suit everyone so a blanket suggest to wait it out is not always good advice.

While this is being speculative and technically againt the Terms of Use, there's no way Apple are going release a new Mac Pro before Christmas. It ain't going to happen. This means you're wating until next year. So then the question is going to be "do I wait a few more months for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard"? If you answer yes you're looking at waiting over 6 months from today to get your Mac Pro. Then again, you'll probably be mid-product cycle and would be thinking to wait another 3 months for the next Mac Pro.

There's always a reason to wait up until you find out what you're missing out on!! 😉

Ned,
Always to the point and always making so much sense, thank you very much. another reason why there will possibly not be a release before Christmas is because Apple tends to make major announcements at macworkd Expo in San Francisco, and that does not happen until Jan/8/07-- again, not to speculate but to speak from personal experience.

But please, we are not talking merely to people who want their acomputers as presents, but to those of us who make our living through the Macintosh platform.

saludos,
Alvaro
