iPhone 6 plus video is dark compared to the pictures

I have noticed that the videos on the iphone 6 plus are very dark compared to the pictures ... Is this normal or does my phone have an issue ?

I'm having the same issue on my iphone 6+ 64GB.

Just to be clear, the issue in this thread is that videos are darker than still photos. Is that your problem? From your description it doesn't sound like it. If your problem is different I suggest starting a new thread rather than tagging along on a 2 year old thread about a different issue.

He lawrence , I do not think this is the law of physics.

The issue is as you may or may not seem to understand is that using the Camera app with rear camera and video produces extremely dark videos.

Using a third party app, on my part "Moviepro" fixed this issue.

Also using messaging also gives a better result. The phone needs a software update to fix this.I am not sure what phone you have but if you have the 6 or 6s or any variation, try it.

Just to confirm it's the rear video camera that is dark and taking a normal picture is very much acceptable.

I have compare the same scene with a Samsung Galaxy S3 and iPhone 6 and found my phone (iPhone6+) to be so dark it's unusable.

I appreciate it wouldn't create the best video in the world, but at least it would be nice to try rather than oh it's dark i wish i had your phone. Considering the iphone 6+ isnt a cheap phone.

He is talking about the same issue.

The rear camera video is very dark, shoot the same scene with the front cam and it is much brighter.

It seems the iso is locked at 100 for some weird reason when using video on the rear cam in the camera app.If you go to message and take a video from there, magically it is much brighter.

There's no magic. The front camera is much lower resolution, which means the pixels are larger and have more light-grabbing capability.

Except the post I responded to was NOT about video; it was about still pictures.

The 3rd party app probably lowers the resolution of the image, so more sensor pixels are used, or raises the virtual ASA rating, which reduces the signal-to-noise ratio. There are a lot of 3rd party camera apps that offer various features. But the laws of physics do apply. To get higher sensitivity you must give up resolution and/or signal to noise ratio which was called "grain" in a film camera). This has been true since the camera was invented. If you only care about brightness and are willing to live with grainier or lower resolution then use an app that gives you this option.

Lawrence,

this whole thread is about Video. He assumed so he never actually said it when he said PIC.This is all about darker videos from back facing camera.

If you try to take a video from the messaging app using the back camera the video is bright and good , compared to using the camera app.this tells you it has nothing to do with pixels or face vs back cam...its a bug, iso is locked at 100 and is not increasing.your explanation of camera diff with lower res means bigger pixels etc is correct, but it does NOT affect the issue here.

I hope you understand my point.

Lawrence , I am a part time photographer and i know everyhting there is to know about ISO and noise and resolution.

3rd party APPS, DO NOT lower the resolution.I am shooting Full HD at 30FPS and EVEN 60 FPS at Auto iso and it bumps the iso up to 1200 even , a little grain, no issues, but as grainy as other phones like samsung or LG etc.....

I am telling you , the issue is the auto iso is LOCKED when using the default camera app with the back facing camera.

That is the problem.

For your info, raising the ASA or ISO , INCREASES the signal to noise ratio, not decrease as you said.

you also stated that "To get higher sensitivity you must give up resolution and/or signal to noise ratio "

Incorrect. You do not give up resolution, HD or FHD stays that way , it does not get less, your Higher sensitivity, will give you more grain due to the increased Signal on the sensor."

To sum it all up sir,

Apple has a problem, the auto iso is locked at 100 and the whole video is very very dark.

I wish you would actually experience and compare videos and phones and see for yourself what countless people here are complaining about before you try to give scientific explanations and disregard the matter.I have friends with ip6 and 6s and 6s plus as well as my own and we all have the same issue.

When you use 120fps or 240 fps for slow motion, ok the video will get EVEN DARKER ....that i understand, but normal low light videos area disgrace on the iphone using back camera with normal camera app.

I said before, using an app called movie pro , allows me to set resolution, iso, fps etc all manually. That makes the phone act as it should. The app is FREE, try it and compare yourself.

just to be clear, you are stating that there is NO problem with video in low light ?

Feb 9, 2016 4:21 PM in response to alexbilusic

THat is correct. The app is bu deepak sharma. honestly i yried so many and some injad paid for and some were free. I mist have gotten mixed up. Trust me it is worth every penny. U have full control over all settings. From resolution of recording to iso, shutter speed, fps auto focus lock and auto exposure. It is a full fledged app. The only one that gave me the reaults i wanted. Just set it fhd at 30fps or 60fps and auto iso and u can record like a charm night videos.

LEt me know if you choose to get it

I have the same issue with my Ip6, all videos useless dark.... my IP1 did better videos... very disappointing...

I tried out everything, 30fps low resolution, but now change...

This is a bad joke from Apple, I'm puzzled that this has not been fixed long time ago.

I just tried out movie pro and it fixes the problem...

You can manually adjust the aperture and change all settings, FPS, resolution...

NICE Software, money well spend...
