Help!! Why doesn't MCP recognize 16gb ram?

Hi!

I recently bought 16gb ram to upgrade my MCP 13'' from early 2011, although the computer doesn't recognize ll the 16, just says 8 when i check the settings, both slots occupied with 4 instead of the actual 8. I have tried to take them out and inserting them again, no change, as well as checking the sticks so they're what they should be, 8gb. It's the Crucial 8 GB DDR3L 1333 SODIMM I've got.

Contact Crucial - they have excellent tech support. If you don't want to wait until support is up, try posting in one of the Crucial forums.

You may want to try a SMC reset first -> Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) as well as a NVRAM reset -> OS X Mavericks: Reset your computer’s PRAM.

Csound1,

I've used 16GB of Crucial RAM in my 2011 machine, purchased in March of 2012, since April of 2012. I really don't think that OWC is any 'better' than Crucial. More expensive certainly, but not any better!

If the OP has purchased the correct RAM for his/her 2011 model, it should work. I've not heard of that problem before if one is using the correct modules.

Yes, so have I.

And in my experience Crucial usually works but OWC always works. That's why it is 'better' OWC is far more consistent than Crucial, but as you point out Crucial is cheaper.

Ah - there's your problem them. Contact whomever you ordered from and get the modules replaced with the correct speed. Sometimes a faster module will work, sometimes it doesn't. Go to the Crucial website and download the System Scanner to make certain that you get the correct modules for your model.

Good luck,

Thanks for the replys, didn't help though. Just saw that the sticks are supposed to be 1333 DD3, the computer is reading them as 1600 DDR3, and for half it's actual memory...

Are you saying that one module is 1333 MHz and the other is 1600 MHz? If that is that is case, there would be a compatibility problem. Again I would test each 8 GB module independently.

OWC has tested 2011 MBPs with 1600 MHz RAM and found that it works with their RAM. This may or may not be the case with RAM from other vendors. Macs have a reputation of being very selective with RAM.

Ciao.

No, both modules are labeled 1333 MHz, but the system reads them as 1600 MHz, even if it's just one module in the slots. I bought Crucial from a local vendor here in Sweden, not sure if OWC can deliver here. But as I was saying, someone at the memory-making factory at Crucial must have done the ol' switcheroo, because the package itself says 1333 MHz, as well as the modules.

Thanks!

I suggest you visit the vendor with the original RAM installed in the MBP and demonstrate that the MBP works properly. Ask if you can be provided with 16 GB RAM that works in the MBP (in the shop). If not, ask for a refund.

I believe OWC will ship overseas, but shipping costs and customs duties may make this very expensive. How are you fixed for Kronor?

Ciao.
