swscan.apple.com in hosts file

Hi,


I noticed a few new entries in my macbook hosts file looking like this:


127.0.0.1swscan.apple.com


and so on..


I understand these are the addresses to the apple update services. It seems strange to me that these addresses are pointing to my local machine?

Does anyone know if this is suppose to be like this , or is someone trying to prevent my mac from updating?

That certainly isn't normal. Either you inadvertently installed something that edited your hosts file, or someone else did this on purpose.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.

Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.

2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.

There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.

You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.

In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.

You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.

Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.

4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:

☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.

☞ Paste into the window of another application.

☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.

☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.

The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.

5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.

6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.

7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.

8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.

Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.

9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter

exec bash

and press return. Then paste the script again.

10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.

If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.

11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line

[Process completed]

to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.

12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.

At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.

If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.

13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

I've deleted the mentioned files. ( and if anyone is interested: /Users/<YourUserName>/.JavaW [This is an invisible file]).


I'm not quite sure what else I should/ could do to clear my system.


I can't imagine I've downloaded the notorious flash player from anywhere else but the adobe servers...


In any case, than so much for the support. I have to say this is something I love about the apple community!

You could choose to run the test above, which would provide more information about this newly-discovered malware. Or, you could post a link that you think you downloaded it from. Otherwise, you should assume that your system is still compromised. In that case, see below.

If you know or suspect that a hostile intruder has either had physical access to it, or has been able to log in remotely, then there are some steps you should take to make sure that the computer is safe to use.

First, depending on the circumstances, computer tampering may be a crime, a civil wrong, or both. If there's any chance that the matter will be the subject of legal action, then you should do nothing at all without consulting a lawyer or the police. The computer would be the principal evidence in such a case, and you don't want to contaminate that evidence.

Running any kind of "anti-virus" software is pointless. If I broke into a system and wanted to leave a back door, I could do it in a way that would be undetectable by those means—and I don't pretend to any special skill as a hacker. You have to assume that any intruder can do the same. Commercial keylogging software—which has legitimate as well as illegitimate uses—won't be recognized as malware, because it's not malware.

The only way you can be sure that the computer is not compromised is to erase at least the startup volume and restore it to something like the status quo ante. The easiest approach is to recover the entire system from a backup that predates the attack. Obviously, that's only practical if you know when the attack took place, and it was recent, and you have such a backup. You will lose all changes to data, such as email, that were made after the time of the snapshot. Some of those changes can be restored from a later backup.

If you don't know when the attack happened, or if it was too long ago for a complete rollback to be feasible, then you should erase and install OS X. If you don't already have at least two complete, independent backups of all data, then you must make them first. One backup is not enough to be safe.

When you restart after the installation, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process for a new computer. That’s when you transfer the data from a backup in Setup Assistant.

Select only users in the Setup Assistant dialog—not Applications, Other files and folders, or Computer & Network Settings. Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled.

Reinstall third-party software from original media or fresh downloads—not from a backup, which may be contaminated.

Unless you were the target of an improbably sophisticated attack, this procedure will leave you with a clean system. If you have reason to think that you were the target of a sophisticated attack, then you need expert help.

That being done, change all Internet passwords and check all financial accounts for unauthorized transactions. Do this after the system has been secured, not before.

The illegal software is the only currently known infection vector, but that doesn't mean it's the only one... only that it's the only one known.


In any case, the presence of those files means your system is infected. Worse, because this malware opens a backdoor, everything on your system should be considered compromised at this point. You will need to erase the hard drive, then either reinstall everything from scratch or restore from a backup prior to the infection. (You can examine the creation date on the /Library/Application Support/JavaW folder to determine the date and time of infection. If you have already deleted it, you'll have to examine your backups carefully to determine when the infection appeared.)


Regarding the hosts file issue, I'm not convinced yet that this is related. I have a test system infected with this malware, and its hosts file is untouched. It's possible another variant exists that modifies the hosts file, or that your system got a command to make that change while mine did not, or that it's completely unrelated. In any case, the fix for the first problem will also fix this one.

Honestly, not even the experts could tell you exactly what to look for. It may be educational for us to see what's on your system, but it's not going to help you in the slightest. Whether we see something suspicious or not means little, since there could always be plenty of other things we wouldn't see. (See my previous post regarding the measures you'll need to take to clean up your system.) If you don't feel comfortable posting the results, don't worry about it.

If nobody has physical access to your machine then the only other way in would require your permission to share over the network.


Open System Preferences->Sharing and make sure nothing is checked that you don't absolutely need and control.


If you are on a local network (using a strong WPA2 password, if WiFi) then your router has a firewall that should adequately protect you from intrusion. You will normally not need to activate your Mac firewall in such cases.


I've been waiting to see the results of running Linc's diagnostics so we can rule out certain infections that will be obvious. It's not clear to at least a couple of us that your host file corruption was caused by iWorm and since there was at least one other user today with a similar situation, we are concerned that there may be something else going around. That's why you might be doing a big favor to the community by giving us as much detail about this as you can right now.


Did you keep a list of all of the bogus entries in your host file and if so can you share that with us.

Yes, they are just document files (I assume php files are also considered document files, furthermore its just docs and photos).

Although I'm not sure what data is being saved in icloud (what about iphone backups?!)


As for the system diagnostic test result. Obviously I can't send them anymore. But in general I think it's quite tricky to ask if people can post these kind of info.

I'm trying to figure out where the infection originated. As I mentioned before, my mbp did not have any illegal software installed and as far as I know I had all the necessary security measures in place (router (airport) firewall, mbp firewall, file sharing off (although printer sharing was on) and the pc itself was password protected). What else can one do?!


I've been at a few congresses lately and I'm thinking that here maybe someone got access, but I didn't swap usb sticks or things like that.


Reading around a bit it seems like the last few days there have been more people getting infected. For the sake of anyone facing this problem, and since you guys seem to know what you are talking about, any further suggestions as how to keep (getting) your devices clean and protected would be more then welcome!

I understand some of your reluctance, but that's really the only way for troubleshooters to be of much assistance. Both Linc's diagnostics and EtreCheck have been fine tuned to avoid revealing any privacy information. Dozens of people post such information here every day.

Keep GateKeeper engaged, install everything offered by Software Update in a timely manner, heed all OS X warnings, don't enter your admin password or approve an untrusted certificate without fully understanding why, pay close attention to all installer dialogs that you are presented with, use common sense. I'm not sure I agree. Reports in the news about ShellShock (several bash vulnerabilities) and iWorm seem to have caused a lot of renewed interest in malware over the past week or so and speculation of infection, but maybe one or two confirmed reports of actual infection by iWorm and I've seen none at all for ShellShock. Almost all the remaining reports of infection are simply adware which is annoying, but not really malicious. That's why we were all very interested in your situation. I do suspect that something is adding entries to hosts files, but I think it's something we don't know about yet.

I think I was reading that about 18K macs have already been infected by iWorm, but of course I don't know where this number is coming from.


One more thing, there is a good change I connected my iphone to my mbp since the infection. Is there any risk here? (is my mbp actually sending stuff to my iphone?). And if yes, should I reinstall my iphone as well?

It comes from Dr. Web and has not been confirmed by anybody else. It's based on the number of separate IP's who have contacted a C&C server that they probably took over for measurement purposes. I suspect that most have been infected for several months now and we are just finding out about it. 18K represents something like .002% of all Macs out there and Flashback infected about 50 times more.

iPhones cannot be infected by anything unless they are jailbroke, so no risk.

As for were it originated, I'm still in the dark here. Maybe someone stuck a usb drive in my macbook, but having said that I realize this is very unlikely and as always the real reason is probably allot more simple. Could I have been visiting a malicious website? Though I'm sure I didn't install anything.


It's actually quite scary but also a nice dip into reality. Apparently even a very close environment like apple's osx is not totally save from whoever wants to

do harm. (yes, Microsofts OS is worse).


Anyway, I've changed all my data so I think (hope) I'm in the clear.
