Screen turned off (goes black) during phone call and won't wake up

During a phone call, if the screen goes black (I presume due to the proximity sensor), the phone will sometimes not wake up - even with the home button - and not allow me to access the touch screen. It's frustrating if I receive another call (call waiting) or if I have an option to press.

My first iPhone 6 required a hard reset (home plus power) to take it out of this mode. The replacement phone I received from the Apple store will wake up with the home button after the call terminates, but not during the call. This is not a situation where the lighting in the room is too dark for the screen to wake up. The event will happen during the day in a room lit by sunlight.

It also seems that the situation happens when I call a phone and go to voice mail or have a number option to press (1, for sales, 2 for tech support, etc) - but perhaps that is the only time I notice the issue as that is when it would be meaningful for me to access the screen.

In case it matters, I have a black 64GB iPhone 6 for use on the Verizon network. I have also upgraded to 8.02.

Any help would be appreciated as I find it hard to believe that this is a hardware issue that has occurred on two phones.

Same problem here. No case, no screen protector. iPhone 6 laying on its back in speakerphone mode on my desk. After a few minutes talking, screen went dark. Couldn't get control of the phone back until a few minutes after the other person had hung up. I did notice the phone got quite hot. No other processes-just the speakerphone conversation at the time. 64GB, iOS 8.02

I have had the same issue. From other posts I saw it looked like it is due to the proximity sensor causing the screen to go black. Normally the screen would come back once you pull the phone away from your ear.

From what I read elsewhere, when using headphones or making a call with the speaker option the proximity sensor is not active, so the screen will always remain lit unless you press the sleep button.

I plugged the headphones in and the screen came back without having to reset and I remained on the call. This fixed it for me. I hope this works for the rest of you!

I have had the same sporadic issue for over a year. It has to be a bug in Apple's software.

Problem started with my iPhone 6 and is now occurring with my iPhone 6S.

I have been through multiple OS upgrades, so it is something with software.

Chances of Apple fixing this are slim to none.

Hard to reproduce and they will just make excuses as to why it is your problem and not theirs.

I have had this same issue for a while now and following Doubledatt365's instructions fix the issue for me.

As soon as I enable Voice & Data in the Cellular menu this issue returns almost every time I am on a call.

Really annoying though since this means I can no long receive emails while on a call unless I am also on Wifi.

Come on Apple!

Same exact issue as people mention above. When on a call the screen goes black and phone does not respond to anything. Have to do a hard reset to regain access to my phone. I have a iphone 6 (64GB), which it appears most people are complaining about. Been hunting for solutions in forums, but nothing seems to work. Apple appears to still be denying its an issue. Super frustrating, especially when you have spent a long time on hold for a company and then have to start all over again!

There are two issues that are getting confused, I think. Phone rings, proximity sensor causes the screen to go dark, call cannot be answered. But the phone is not locked up. If I press the home button it will wake up, but it does not go to the phone answer screen. I still can't answer the call. Changing Verizon settings does not help.

@apple please fix this!

Iphone 6, Ios 9.2.1

Phone goes dark during call, cannot wake up again. However the call still is active, but no reaction to Home button or power button. Issue can just be resolved by hard reset (home + power button for 30 seconds).

This is not acceptable for such an expensive product!

My screen was going black and calls were dropping. People told me that they could not reach me after a few calls. I did all the reboots and reset with no effect. The Apple Genius guys figured it out. They performed all the routine diagnostics and then removed my Verizon SIM card and replaced it with a new card and forced the phone to reset.

Once my phone worked with the replacement SIM, they replaced my original SIM card and forced the settings back to my phone. It worked and cleared up all my problems. All fixed at no cost.

FYI, the Genius guys seem to be able to always fix everything for me, with the least cost. Apple Care Phone Support used to be great. Now they are mostly script readers. I have been to Apple stores in NYC, MA, FL and RI. These young Apple Geniuses (I am 65) are always amazing, smart and helpful. Plus if they get stumped, they confer with their many fellow Geniuses. they have fixed my Iphone, Ipad and MAcbook issues successfully every time.

Hey Natgeoff, have you solved your issue?

Can you believe I have de same issue and still Apple did not answered this thread?!?!?!

Sometimes I call telecom companies services or any other Automatic Response Unit machine answers where I'm required to dial some number in order to get through a menu of audio options and I just can't do it anymore!! Iphone would hang at a black screen right after I pull it out of my ear. The drill is: I dial the number at keyboard, make the call and put Iphone close to my ear so I can hear the answer after call is connected, all works fine till this point when some audio menu comes up and asks me to dial anything at the keyboard, then I pull out the phone from my ear, it lights up and seconds after it goes dark again! Then I try pressing the home button, this is when it comes back to life but again, seconds after, goes dark... And it keeps doing this while I keep trying to use the keyboard over the brief seconds it stays on... Isn't this the most strange bug you ever seen? It could be a combination of software and hardware behavior because my Iphone is a 5S model and it operated fine until the last iOS update to 9.3.

As I've read here from another person, this is unacceptable for such an expensive and advanced piece of hardware.

Does anyone else still faces it?

thank you!

Jason,

I have the same experience when using the phone in my iPhone 6. Screen goes dark & I am unable to use any features; homekey non-responsive, on/off Etc. The phone is paralyzed, so your suggestions can't be implemented. The person on the other side of the phone convo is still connected & we can hear each other. Once THEY disconnect the call my phone screen comes 'alive' .

Can you test this in your Lab? It seems to always happen when I am leaving a VoiceMail.
