Sharing Video Mac to iPad (Yosemite/iOS8) via Airport Extreme

Hi

I work in professional sport and need to send video to an iPad from my Macbook.

I know that the new updated OS and iOS will allow me to airdrop the video easily but at most venues we struggle for a wifi connection. If we had an Airport unit would it allow us to create our own personal network that will allow us to share video via airdrop? Or will Airport still need a connection to a router?

AirDrop is a peer to peer protocol that does not require an infrastructure.

Not all MacBooks have the required hardware to use AirDrop though. Obviously newer models do, so which model MacBook are you expecting to use?
