Safari and Google Chrome Stop Responding Unless I Click Off of Page

For about a year now I have had the problem of Safari (and now Google Chrome) not responding to typing, click, and scrolling. I first noticed the problem when a page in Safari would not scroll. I discovered that if I click off of Safari to the desktop or to another application and then click back on Safari, the scrolling would was working again. Then after another click or two the scrolling would stop. The same behavior happens when typing into fields on a web page. I can be typing my name but nothing appears in the field. If I click off of Safari and click back on again, the words I typed appear in the field. The same applies to buttons on the web page.

If I quit and restart Safari, the problem goes away temporarily, but within the next several hours the problem would return. For the longest time, I thought it was a problem with Safari, but I have been using Google Chrome lately, and the same behavior is now showing up in Chrome.

This is all on my Intel iMac.

Many thanks for helping attempt to resolve this.

Regarding the USB devices that are turned off, I have not done anything in this regard since the problem was present with all peripheral devices removed (except my keyboard and mouse).

Regarding the Network preferences, no proxies were selected.

MacKeeper had been removed from my computer many months ago, but I reinstalled and uninstalled it as directed.

Regarding locked files and incorrect permissions, I ran the command as directed in terminal.

Regarding Font Book, I removed about 15 fonts that had warnings associated with them.

Regarding Safari, Google Chrome, and FIrefox extensions, I removed Amazon Shopping Assistant and Ebay Shopping Assistant. avast! could not be found.

I have restarted and will report back if the problem returns or report back in a few days if it doesn't return.
