Ipad2 has major problems with iOS 8

Unfortunately I leaped before I looked and installed iOS 8 on my iPad 2. It constantly loses cellular service and only way I have found to get it back for a little while is a hard restart. Even then it can take several minutes and several retries to restart it. three retries and ten minutes later I am back to "No Service". Web pages load very slowly and sometimes not at all. Domes Safari shuts down on its own but only when I am in the middle of something important. Latest wrinkle is the touch screen stops working and then it freezes requiring amother hard restart. Several times a day. I even uttered the evil "thank goodness I have a kindle fire."

The ios 8 update to fix problems just made things worse. Does anyone have a solution to these problems? Is the a way to get back to iOs 7?

No, there is no way to get to iOS 7, so that's out of the question.

Try to restore your iPad to "factory fresh condition". Apple is currently selling iPad 2s on their online store website, and those are "factory fresh iPad 2s" and thus are fully operational with iOS 8.0.2. You probably need to get your iPad 2 back to the factory installed condition, to see how it's operating.

Be sure to do your backups first, before fiddling with it. Here's how to get your iPad 2 - just like the ones that Apple is selling TODAY on their online store website.

Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings

Don't restore your personal data just yet. You can do that later. First try it out in the factory fresh condition and see how everything operates. If there are still major problems and things won't work properly, you may have a hardware problem that needs to be fixed. You'll have to schedule something with the Genius Bar.

Try that and let me know how it goes ... :-) ...

My ipad2 16 GB wifi only was purchased new this year Feb 2014. It has 12.2 free out of 12.9. Only apps installed are the default except iBooks with zero "0" books downloaded. I installed iOS 8.0 and had problems, missed the release of 8.0.1 as I was out of town but immediately installed 8.0.2 when I got back. Had same problems others are complaining about, Slowness, freezing locked up screen, no response to touch, fast battery drain and Safari froze with blank web pages. But far worse in Yahoo mail which is all I use this for - email and web browsing. Problems are hit or miss, sometimes it works fine, other times I can see my inbox but the Mail on the right side is blank - only that spinning wheel. Other times I could get on the iPad communities forum but not to the "using ipad " link, only a frozen screen, the progress bar in Safari would be blue for about an inch across the top and hang. I called Apple support and the support professional walked me thru settings ie, turn off automatic downloads and background app refresh etc which helped slow the battery drain. Since I had no data - none-nada-zilch I tried the reset and erase all content. Did not really seem to help, still had problems, mainly Safari and Yahoo mail and this terrible auto insert keyboard which usually changes the words as I type. Uploaded my logs twice to Apple as requested and still have an open case but after reading these threads, decided to try the reload of iOS thru iTunes and set as a new iPad. All the same to no avail. I still have Safari issues and Yahoo mail spiking wheel screens and several times since doing this reload of iOS now I get disconnected with an error that "Your internet connection is no longer available" while sitting in the same spot and while my wife happily browsing the web on her laptop 10 feet away from me. If Ihave wait 30 - 60 sec it reconnects and I get into mail. The Apple tech said an option / workaround was to change browsers, ie, Puffin or Chrome etc so it seems that Apple knows they have a Safari issue that is making many of us very Frustrated. This was my first Apple purchase and will be my last if Apple does not get fixed. Reason I decided to write this was to say that reinstalling iOS thru iTunes and a factory reset as new iPad does NOT fix that problems. It is an Apple iOS/safari problem. My 2 cents !

I tried the reset and erase all content through settings -general - reset as a first step. I tried the set up as a new ipad and it did not help. I read several other posts that said it may help by downloading a new ios file thru itunes and reinstalling so I gave it a try but results were the same. It did not work for me and I disagree with posting that as a resolution.

ToyotaRick, I appreciate your frustration. I hope something works for you. I do think Apple should allow you to go back if an update doesn't work. Star Traveler posted a resolution that worked for me and others but not THE resolution. I still occasionally get NO SERVICE but very rarely and need only restart iPad to get it back so I have a 95% resolution of the problem. THE resolution needs to come from Apple.

Hi - my situation is similar. I have had no service (3G) since installing ios8 on my Ipad 2. Apple genius bar replaced my ipad2 on monday (13th oct) with a brand new ipad2 which was only installed with ios7. They installed ios8 in the shop & told me to restore it when I got back home. I did & 3G came back on briefly - but went off again after 2 hours. I've restored again to factory settings - to try again & its still the same. Apple also told me to check my SIM card & get it replaced in case it was that. I've just got back from 02 with a new sim card (my old got tested & it was fine anyway). Still no 3G. So I'm booked in again to apple genius for next Thursday to see what they so next as my new Ipad is under 90 day warranty. So another week without 3G (I am a social media consultant so I really need a working Ipad with 3G!). I believe its an issue Apple are aware of & are not owning up to the scale of the problem - Apple gave me a replacement Ipad 2 with no questions asked & didn't spend any time looking into it. I have received great service so far - i just hope they can resolve the situation for me on Thursday once & for all.

I have cell service on my iPad about 90% of the time but the iPad is still goosey. Sometimes it works perfectly, other times it drops 3 G service, is sluggish and apps work unpredictably. I haven't been to the genius bar yet. I do have a new iPhone6 and when I was setting it up at one point it notified me Att had to update and reconfigure for iOS 8. Perhaps this is what the iPad needs too. Meanwhile, I agree with you that Apple needs to seriously address this problem. At the very least make it possible to go back to iOS 7 if performance is damaged with 8.

So i restored my iPad2 to factory fresh - didn't use iTunes - and it ran fairly good for about 10 days. Then yesterday I was reading a news article and it froze up, then went dark. I tried holding the power and the return button in at the same time to try to restart it - nothing. IOS8 bricked my ipad. But as Star Traveler points out: It's not Apple fault. It's my fault for buying an Apple product!

You never heard that comment from me ... LOL ...

But, in terms of getting a "clean system" (in the event you have some corrupt system files), the iTunes route is what gets you that clean system. From what I've read, the erase on the iPad will leave the system files in place. What you need is the reset to factory default, in order to truly troubleshoot your device.

Try the solution I received when going to the Genius Bar. It should work perfectly. After confirming that my wife's iPad2 wasn't working he ran diagnostics... and nothing out of ordinary showed up. The Apple store employee then told me the iOS8 upgrade shouldn't have been PUSHED to the iPad2. His solution? BUY A NEW iPAD. Since I'm a nice guy and knew he wasn't responsible for making the decision to PUSH out the upgrade I thanked him for his help and left.

So there you have it straight from the Genius Bar tech. Buy a new iPad. Problem solved.
