iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 8
Problem: Had same issue. The charger wouldn't stay in and I had to prop up the phone in weird positions to keep it connected for a charge.
Solution: Like the rest. Toothpick and pulled out a nice lint ball. Also took a mini vacuum and held over the port.
Results: Clean and clear port and charging like new.
I've always had my phone (going back to a Motorola flip phone) in my pocket. First time I've had an issue with lint. Seems like this connector is the perfect size and shape to collect and keep lint.
TThe toothpick worked for me -- socket looked clear but pulled out a piece of pocket lint big enough to trip on.
This is bizarre but true. I have my iPhone in a my purse and occasionally also drop a blood pressure pill in to take when I am scheduled. Apparently yesterday a piece of the pill got stuck in the charger port. I could not get the charger inserted into the port. I read some accounts of similar issues and used a toothpick to clean out the port. It took three toothpicks and 2 glasses of wine to get it cleaned out and now it is apparently charging. Gee it scared me because I depend on my iPhone for scheduling, looking up info and phone contacts. My husband is ill and my iPhone has saved me countless hours of time on all of these processes. I would literally die without my iPhone! It was on 17 percent charged when I got it to charge. Thank you everyone for your help and ideas.

I'm hoping the wine went into you and not the phone! 😉
Glad you got it working again.
Been having this issues for a few weeks with the added difficulty of 'This accessory may not be compatible', Cleaned out the lightning port with a toothpick and pulled out a years worth of pocket lint, quick blast of compressed air to clear any extra and voila! connects perfectly every time now!
I could hardly believe it, but that was the problem for me too. I used a pin to edit out the lint, and what lot of it there was!
Saved me a trip to the AppleStore, thank you.

Glad it helped!
WOW!!!
I was fixing to setup an appointment to take my phone in and stumbled upon the post. I looked with a flashlight, and could not see anything. Charger looked like it went all the way in but was loose. Found this thread and said F it, I'll dig at it. Sure enough there was a LOT of white lint shoved in so perfectly it blended in. Charging like a champ now!
THANK YOU!!!!!
Thank you for this. Even with a torch the grain was very hard to spot.
Lesson: don't use Basmati rice.

That's what the forum is here for. So glad it helped you out.
Thank you so much. I was frantic and it's a 40 mile drive through a blizzard to the nearest Apple store.
