App Store app update does not work

The app store update is not working. "Update All" is greyed out. When I tap on individual apps' "Update" button, it just opens the app and does not update it. I've closed App Store and restarted it and I've rebooted my iPhone. This is new. Seems like it just started after updating the App Store, ironically.

I see this, too. iPad mini retina, iOS 7.0.6. It started a day or two ago. The problem survives App Store restart and device shutdown and reboot. One odd thing was that a tunnelbear update was stuck in download. The only way I could delete it was to go to settings->usage and delete it from there.

Hi,

Please check the below settings:

SETTINGS > iTunes & APP STORE > Automatic Downloads.

In this section, is the Apps ON {GREEN BUTTON}?

In this Section is the , USE CELLULAR DATA ON or OFF?

> If the Cellular Data is OFF, then it will Automatically update on WiFi Network and you do not have to manually update the applications.

I> f the Cellular Data is ON, then its maybe cause of the slow cellular network that you are unable to update applications.

I (and probably We) don't have automatic update.

This is a very recent problem, it happened since a few days ago, and exactly as described in the first post.

"Update All" grayed out and individual "Update" starts the application instead of updating it.

And I didn't change anything in the Settings.

Hopefully more people will find out this problem in the next few days and find this post to report it.

I appreciate the help, Abhishek, but none of that is working. On my phone, Cell Data was on as it has been ever since I've owned that phone. I turned it off just to see what happens. No change. "Update All" is still greyed out and tapping on individual "Update" buttons just opens the app.

What we'd like to know is what happened to the App Store app because to me, that is what is the problem. I believe that all of us have done nothing to settings and just recently found this to be a problem. This needs to be reported to Apple.

Just to help everyone with this issue until it is fixed you can still update any app by doing this:

. Search for the app in the app store.

. Click on the "Open" icon next to the app name.

. Enter your Apple ID password if you are asked.

. This will update the app instead of opening it.

You can also click on the app picture in the search list this will open a new window where you will be able to click on the "Update" button.

A message will tell you that you already have this app and ask you if you want to update it.

Note: In the App Store update section the updated app will still have an "Update" button next to its name but it will be listed with the updated apps.

Here is what I discovered. All of the apps in question are already updated. Everyone check your apps for this. I looked up the app's version number in the description in the App Store and then in the About or Settings of the app and compared the two. All of the apps that have the Update button are actually already updated. That would explain why the Update All button is greyed out. So the real problem is that for some reason, the App Store app is not recognizing this and still thinks these apps need to be updated. That would also explain why when tapping on Update that it opens the app instead because the button should really say "Open."
