App Store app update does not work

The app store update is not working. "Update All" is greyed out. When I tap on individual apps' "Update" button, it just opens the app and does not update it. I've closed App Store and restarted it and I've rebooted my iPhone. This is new. Seems like it just started after updating the App Store, ironically.

Did you try comparing your version numbers on your device and the version number listed in the App Store? I noticed one thing which corroborates my earlier findings. I just turned automatic update off, then back on again. My apps updated. Now the apps are listed under a heading saying "Updated October 14, 2014." Notice the past tense. And all the apps still have an "Update" button instead of "Open" button. "Update All" is no where to be found, not even grayed out. So at least for me, it is doing its job and updating the apps. The UI is just wonky.

I have the same problem too. I have an iPhone 5 with ios 7.0.2. The "Update All" option has been grayed out and whenever I choose to individually update each of my apps, my phone opens the app itself instead. So I looked through some of the suggestions here and like bwoods suggested, I looked to see if the app version was the same as the latest one on the app store, to see if it's the App Store that has a problem. It turns out that they weren't the same version and that my apps really needed updating.

However, I searched the for each of the apps on the app store and when I clicked on it, the usual "Open" option became 'Update". I clicked on it, it asked for my password and now it's succesfully updating ! This is a good option for those still experiencing this problem .

Hope this helps.

just tried the temporary fix above. Made a list of waiting updates. Searched for each in the AppStore app. Click on "open" (which should say "update" and the app does update. Alternatively, click on the app name in that same screen you went to via "search" and you'll see the "update" button. Click it and it does update.

however, you need to do each app individually. Clearly is an issue with labeling in the store itself.

i hope Apple is seeing this and fixes the problem.

You do not have to search the App Store. Just click on the app name in the update list. This takes you to the details page, where you can update if needed. if youre using automatic updates the app itself is probably being updated even though it doesn't look like it. Just check the app version number against iTunes.

I'm fairly certain the problem is on Apple's end. Why else would this happen to everyone all at the same time? There's no way all of us goofed up some sort of App Store setting on the same date.

I've found at least 3 other threads on the same topic. If everyone sends in a bug report, perhaps Apple will do something. To my knowledge, they ignore these forums. Apple's customer service is really appalling when it comes to fixing problems like this or implementing requested common sense features into their products, so you'll need to make some noise elsewhere. There's nothing you can do to fix this problem short of upgrading to ios8. Perhaps this is Apple's way of forcing us to do so.

I nypassed this issue by turning on app auto-update. After a short while the iphone began updating the apps.

May I make a suggestion: Are there any APP DEVELOPERS who could raise a complaint with Apple? If some people are unable to update their app, that may be something Apple will look into.

Don't forget that large tech companies have various 'waypoints' and 'mile stones' for each of their products. It may be that this issue is in the queue as a bug to fix and Apple are simply waiting for other fixes to get finished and tested too, before releasing an update.

That's the most generous scenario. The least generous is the assumption that Apple are deliberately breaking their apps for iOS7 users.

Zikey's work around works great. And NO the apps in question are not already updated.... I have one I use for work and know it was not updated. It is now and I checked the version before I tried the work around and after, and it now shows the new version number. So THANK YOU Zikey!!!

It is ridiculous that Apple isn't interested in fixing this... it is obviously their issue. I am very unhappy with their lack of concern.

Oh and, whoever suggested that you don't have to search for the app in the store, just touch the name of the app in the update list - that doesn't work at all!! Touching the name yields no result - they aren't links.

I agree, it IS ridiculous how Apple picks and chooses which problems to address and which to ignore.

While the other work arounds work, I find for me the best solution for now is to just leave it on automatic update and it takes care of itself. It is too annoying for me to go through so many steps to manuall update each app one by one.

Hi all,

I have ip5s and ipad mini-R both running on ios 8.1

My issue is eventhough I update by connecting to itunes, there are still notifications on appstore icon.

There is a list of apps that seem to be needing update; but there is not an option to do so. Only you can launch them.

It seems they have replaced the "update" wording with "launch" 😝

I can't update my iPhone to iOS 8 (both the home and sleep buttons are dead on mine; a nightmare to use! I have to plug it in to turn it on!)

Well, instead of replying “I have this problem too”, which isn't going to improve anything, can't we just try to understand the problem and fix it ourselves?

For instance, has anyone tried to figure out what could cause the “update all” button to be greyed out and the “update” button to launch the app? It's obvious these two behaviours are the same problem; it looks like the App Store is being confused by something (that's more reasoning than “it's just a bug Apple has to fix”). Now, it may just be a corrupted plist file (it would trigger this behaviour), in which case restoring iOS would help (has anyone tried restoring?).

These questions can make us progressing on fixing this ourselves (Apple apparently don't want to do that). Saying “Yes, me too” won't solve anything!

This might be a no brainer so forgive me, but this happened to me and it wasn't until I finally got so frustrated I put the phone down (actually threw) and stepped away for an hour and when I came back the update button showed. This was all because I had updated personal information in the app store and it needed time to process.

FYI - I am replying to your post because yours looked the closest in what issue I had so please understand I know your post is an older post and this is just more of a general FYI to everyone. Cheers.
