App Store app update does not work

The app store update is not working. "Update All" is greyed out. When I tap on individual apps' "Update" button, it just opens the app and does not update it. I've closed App Store and restarted it and I've rebooted my iPhone. This is new. Seems like it just started after updating the App Store, ironically.

Have you checked the version number of what is on your phone and the version number that is in the description of the app in the App Store?

(Also, I got a post deleted because I mentioned something that you did in your 4:51 post. Don't know how your post didn't get deleted. Not going to do that again. Feel free to private message me if you can about that issue. I do not see how it is a bug related to that at all otherwise there would be lots of reports on it on the various websites that deal with that matter.) Thanks!

Please stop spreading false explanations that are slowing down the interest from Apple.

. This really a bug.

. Apps versions are different and really need to be updated.

. It happens on untouched/clean devices (like mine).

. It's reported all over the internet even multiples times here:

Can't update apps anymore iPad 2 iOS 7.0.4

apps won't update. When I click "update" it just opens the app. Also, "update all" option is unavailable (grey) iphone 5

I already posted before how to get around it.

Upgrading from IOS 7.x to IOS 8.x also solves the issue at the risk of having a slower device.

I'm posting to keep this conversation going, with hopes of Apple picking up on this issue.

I have a clean, AT&T locked iPhone 5, running whatever the last iOS 7 was, and I'm having this exact same issue. I am up to 10 apps that need to be updated, the "Update All" button is grayed out and when I try to update the apps individually, I only succeed in opening the app instead.

What "false explanations?" I reported exactly what I discovered. YOUR "work around" didn't work for me. And because of that is why I discovered my explanation. That is, my apps were already updated and that is why Update All is probably greyed out and why when tapping on Update for the app opens it. Don't tell me what to do when your "solution" doesn't work. And you really think that I'm "slowing down" Apple's interest in fixing this problem? That's laughable. Thanks for the links. You should have posted those from the beginning and save me a lot of trouble. When I searched this forum, I found no other reports of this problem.

I have the same problem on my 5s with iOS7.0.4. Phone is jailbroken, but I don't think that's going to turn out to be relevant.

Update All is greyed out. Pressing the update button opens an app instead of updating it.

I've changed nothing that I'm aware of to have triggered this problem. Previously, I had things set on automatic updates.

I tried rebooting, resetting all settings, fiddling with the automatic update settings, etc, which did not work.

The apps are actually updated, I think-- the version numbers match the most recent ones on itunes. However if you press on the app name in the update app list page, some apps will still be updatable-- when you get to the page with the full details of the app, and press update there, it sometimes updates (even though the version number is up to date) and sometimes opens the app instead of updating. Updating this way does put a new icon and new blue dot next to it on the springboard. There's a bug doing it this way-- your password is asked when trying to update. That shouldn't happen with iOS7.

The last time the udpates happened correctly was 10/9-- it started 10/10. If everyone else noticed the bug at the same time, it would suggest a problem on Apple's end.

Did you try comparing your version numbers on your device and the version number listed in the App Store? I noticed one thing which corroborates my earlier findings. I just turned automatic update off, then back on again. My apps updated. Now the apps are listed under a heading saying "Updated October 14, 2014." Notice the past tense. And all the apps still have an "Update" button instead of "Open" button. "Update All" is no where to be found, not even grayed out. So at least for me, it is doing its job and updating the apps. The UI is just wonky.
