Best way to do clean restore, set up as new iPhone, and re-sync LOTS of data back to Phone

So, I am trying to do a clean install of iOS 8 because I have tons of "other" as well as some application lagging. I have been meaning to do a fresh install to clear all the junk but I have 420 Apps, tons of pictures in my camera roll, Messages etc. The only way to keep this is to do a restore from backup. I am just seeing advice on to anyone who has undertaken his task and how to keep as much data from the phone as possible...etc a way to re-sync items back into camera roll I know is a app called "Rollit" but looking for advice on shortcuts to make this easier and get the 420 apps back into the folders, keep messages etc. Thanks for all !!!!!

First, sync your camera roll to a computer using whatever app you normally use to copy photos from your digital camera. When you restore the phone it will update to iOS 8, which no longer has a camera roll; instead it creates albums with your photos.

After saving your photos restore using iTunes.

  • BEFORE connecting the phone go to iTunes Preferences on your computer, devices tab, and check "Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically"
  • Connect the phone to a USB port directly on your computer, NOT to a USB hub
  • Click on its name in iTunes, and click Backup. If you are prompted to copy your apps to your computer do so.
  • After the backup finishes click "Check for Updates".
  • When prompted choose to download only.
  • When the download completes click "Restore iPhone"
  • When the update finishes you can opt to restore from the recent backup or set up as new. Choose Restore from Backup, and wait patiently. It will first restore data, then sync back music and apps. But it will take a long time.

You may see "waiting for items to copy", and the message may be up for hours. Just be patient.

Thanks for that, I know how to backup and restore, what I was trying to do was to set up as new iPhone. I have tons of junk in my backup which I am trying to get rid of and the only way is to do a clean install. I'm on iOS 8.1 so I have the camera roll back, and know how to put my photos back into the camera roll after a clean install. When setting up as a new phone, I wanted to see if there were shortcuts to help with organizing my apps (I have 420 apps) and if any way possible to get my messages back into "messages".

Like I said I know there is the third party app to help with the camera roll issue, I just wanted to see if there is a way to help with the apps, messages, settings etc as it is going to take 5+ hours.

I have 680 apps in my iTunes and 420 installed on my iPhone, so if I set up as a new phone, it is going to sync all 680 apps to my phone, I was seeing also how to get only the 420 apps in iTunes and delete the rest.

The only way to restore messages and settings is to restore the backup. Whether you set up as a new phone or not. You can set up as a new phone, then restore a backup as a separate step. This will also restore the music and app catalogs, so if you do a sync after restoring the backup it will put only the apps you had on the phone back on it. If you set up as a new phone and do not restore a backup you will lose your messages and settings.
