iPhone 6 Photos Tinted a Washed-Out Blue Color

I have an iPhone 6 (64Gb) running iOS 8.0.2. All of the pictures I take with it have a washed-out blue tinge to them and so look terrible. Here are some additional facts:

* I have tried turning HDR on and off, and this does not seem to make a difference.

* I have tried adjusting the exposure on the camera screen itself and can make a difference in the brightness, but not the bluish tint.

* I can help the photos a little bit after the fact by using the iOS Photos editing features, but: 1. I cannot make them look like they should, and 2. I thought the camera on the iPhone 6 was supposed to produce superior photos with no adjustments.

* I have taken several photos with both my iPhone 6 and my old iPhone 4s (also running iOS 8.0.2) at the same time and of the same scene, and the color looks MUCH better on the photos take with my old iPhone 4s.

I am looking for help or suggestions. Is there something that I am doing wrong? Is this most likely a hardware problem with the camera itself (i.e., should I take this back to the Verizon store and get a replacement?) Or is it more likely a software issue? Is anyone else experiencing something similar?

Any help is appreciated.

Hi fergyr,

If you are having an issue with your iPhone camera giving poor image quality such as tinting, I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -

iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting

Specifically -

Camera isn't functioning or has undesired image quality

  1. If the screen shows a closed lens or black image, force quit the Camera app.
  2. If you do not see the Camera app on the Home screen, try searching for it in Spotlight. If the camera does not show up in the search, check to make sure that Restrictions are not turned on by tappingSettings > General > Restrictions.
  3. Ensure the camera lens is clean and free from any obstructions. Use a microfiber polishing cloth to clean the lens.
  4. Cases can interfere with the camera and the flash. Try gently cleaning the lens with a clean dry cloth or removing the case if you see image or color-quality issues with photos.
  5. Try turning iPhone off and then back on.
  6. Tap to focus the camera on the subject. The image may pulse or briefly go in and out of focus as it adjusts.
  7. Try to remain steady while focusing:
    • Still images: Remain steady while taking the picture. If you move too far in any direction, the camera automatically refocuses to the center.
Note: If you take a picture with iPhone turned sideways, it is automatically saved in landscape orientation.
    • Video: Adjust focus before you begin recording. You can also tap to readjust focus while recording. Exiting the Camera application while recording will stop recording and will save the video to the Camera Roll.
Note: Video-recording features are not available on original iPhone or iPhone 3G.
  8. If your iPhone has a front and rear camera, try switching between them to verify if the issue persists on both.

All those trouble shooting tips will not help if there is bad software.... Check out the thread we have going here with links to reviews about the horrible software issues Re: iPhone 6 poor picture quality apple

claims ms ineas the only one who has ever complained or called about it so I am amassing enough people to send them. It's been an issue with every iPhone 6 or 6plus I have seen

I'm chiming in here because my 64g iPhone 6 running iOS 8.3 has the same blue tint washout issue - but only on regular photos. If I use panorama or shoot a video, the results are perfectly fine. I can try all three options back to back standing in the same place, and the standard photos are badly washed out compared to video or pano.

So I firmly believe there's some kind of iOS processing issue. it seems to be at its worst on bright sunny days, other than that I can't pinpoint a common reason.

Me too. What an insane stupid feature to put on a camera application. You fumble to get your phone out of your pocket or trying to quickly take an action shot and end up in a stupid filter screen by mistake, then there's an 8 in 9 chance that you select a setting that means the rest of the photos you take for the next week or two until you next download them to your computer are completely ruined. Nice one Apple, thanks a bunch.

I had the same horrible quality issues with my iPhone 5s so just bought a 6 and have same issues. My husband's samsung galaxy takes such great photos! All mine are washed out, with or without flash, inside our out. I checked to see if I had a filter and none doesn't appear. I took some outside non zoomed flowers and you can't even tell the color. I am very upset as my iPhone 3 and 4 did so much better.
