Can I upgrade/increase the DDR3 RAM of MD101HN/A Macbook Pro with DDR5 RAM?

I need to know whether I can increase the 4 GB DDR3 RAM of MD101HN/A Macbook Pro upto 8GB DDR3 RAM or Can I upgrade the DDR3 RAM into DDR5 RAM?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9), MD101HN/A Macbook Pro

TLDR; yes, in theory both are possible. but i will choose to upgrade to 8G.


As per wikipedia DDR5 ram which is slated for commercial production on 2018 iscompatible with the DDR3 Standards. but at 2018 we will have much more faster MacBooks because of the impact of Moore's law. so, upgrading to DDR5 is possible but it probably wont be worth the wait till that time.

I am assuming that you have a mid 2012 13" MBP. That model will accept up to 16 GB RAM with the following specifications: 204-pin PC3-12800 (1600 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM. The best sources for Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.


Deviate from these specifications at your peril. Macs are known to be very selective in regards to RAM, even with some brands having the 'correct' specifications not working. DDR5 is not an option for your MBP.
