Use iphone 4S as ipod touch

Hello,

I recently bought the iphone 6 Plus. I'd like to use my iphone 4S as an ipod touch for my son. If I continue to use my applet ID to access the App store on the 4S will it affect my storage of anything on my 6 Plus? I don't want to reset the 4S phone since there are many apps on there my children use. What steps do I need to take in order to keep the 4S as is, and ensure the contents of the 4S don't get backed up to my 6 Plus. Also, if I don't have a text/phone plan for the 4S can my son still text from the 4S using WiFi?

I keep seeing this same answer to this problem...I'm a little 'tech-slow' but how does this work with the 4s that don't have a SIM card in the phone?

The phone must have a SIM in it in order for the steps in the article to be completed. It does not have to be an active one, but the phone needs to have one present.

A SIM is also necessary if you restore or update the phone. The process will not complete without a SIM present.

You said the SIM card does not need to be active, but would I need to match the original carrier? I'm looking at getting a used 4s to use as a PDA and the original carrier is Sprint. Looking on eBay I can find other carrier SIMs cheap, but not Sprint.

If you are with a carrier that does not use a SIM, it works a little different. I'm not sure how you get past the activation screen with a Sprint phone, but if you want to restore it, it will have to go to Activation. I'm guessing that the Sprint activation servers will just pass it by and allow you to use it.
