Can't download basic lessons in GarageBand

I've just bought a keyboard, connected it to my Mac and started GarageBand. The "Intro to Piano" lesson works great, but I can't access any of the other lessons. I go to "Lesson Store" and click the download icon at the bottom right:

This brings up the dialog asking you to purchase (but doesn't give a price?):

Click "Continue". It asks for me to log in to my AppleID. This brings up the next dialog which says that I've already purchased this.

Afterwards, it asks me to log in to my AppleID again, but leaves me at the same "Add more lessons to GarageBand" dialog.

If I go to the App Store, there's an old version of GarageBand (6.0.5), but nothing otherwise that I can see.

If I go back to the Lesson Store again, I can get to the same purchase dialog, but it won't ask for my AppleID. Clicking the continue button does nothing.

So what gives? Have I already purchased this, or do I need to purchase it again?

Two things to try with the additional content: (see: Expanding GarageBand for Mac (v10.0) content with an in-app purchase)

  • Instead of "Purchasing" the additional content, try to use the command "Restore Purchase" from the GarageBand menu.
  • If that does not work, open the "Purchased" tab of the App Store. Is GarageBand 10.0 listed among your purchased items? If yes, try to delete GarageBand 10.0 from the Applications folder (leave it in the Trash) and then install it again from the Purchased tab.

Thanks for this Léonie! It gets really weird from here. If I make a new project and then chose "Restore Purchases", it will ask me for my Apple ID. I enter my usual Apple ID and password. It will then say that it cannot restore purchases and that there are no purchases to restore. The two dialogs below, in order that they appear.

If I then go to the Lesson Store and try to download again, it does exactly the same thing as what I posted originally. But here's the weird part: after that the "restore purchases" menu item is greyed out!

I'm going to try removing and reinstalling GarageBand now. Thanks again!

Talked to Apple Support today. It's really weird that this worked, but it did. Instead of going to the Lesson Store, he had me go to:

  1. Create a new project
  2. Under GarageBand in the menu bar, select "Download More Sounds"
  3. Again, it asked for my AppleID login
  4. This time, it asked for authorization to purchase $4.99
  5. After accepting it started downloading.

No idea why the usual method didn't work. In any case, just happy that it's downloading now.
