Recurring error: A graphics problem has been detected.

All of a sudden I'm now getting:

A graphics problem has been detected. Click "Report" to submit report...

[Ignore] [Report]

And if I click any of the choices it comes right back pretty soon.

(It's less annoying just leaving the error message there.)

This is on a MBP 15" Retina late 2013 running latest Yosemite OS X 10.10.

This model switches graphics card/GPU when running on battery.

I've tried both safe booting and ran disk check and permissions check from Recovery.

It all started when the display server/loginwindow or something froze. I could move the mouse pointer around, but nothing registered with clicking mouse/touchpad or keyboard.

It happened after/when I plugged in an external screen with the mini-dp/thunderbolt-to-DVI adapter.

(Which have never been a problem before ...)

Any hints as to what may be the problem? Hardware or software?

(I'm aware that Yosemite is still beta, but I assume it's still OK to ask. Couldn't find the dedicated error reporting tool anymore.)

I also tried booting into Diagnostics and some other stuff.

Then I tried creating a new user, and found that the error was user specific.

So I logged back into my user and found all the files named

Kernel_<datestamp>_<computername>.gpuRestart

in /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports. And I just moved away those files, and the error popup disappeared ...

Case solved, I guess. 🙂

mbalgavy, I agree it must be related to yosemite upgrade and not a hardware issue. I also had this happen on two different models. I fixed it by running Yosemite Cache Cleaner from http://www.northernsoftworks.com/support.html. Therefore I think it is some leftover files somewhere that cause the problem. You can download and try it for free during the trial period. I did the deep cleaning option for all caches, no negative side effects and I have used this for years on many different systems to restore them to like new condition and performance. Give it a try and let us know if this works for you too.

I just had the same error on my 1-month old iMac Ultra 5K with Yosemite. It was displaying when the display was dark and unlocking from inactivity. I hope it doesn't display again. I had a work computer reboot suddenly and it is indeed frightening.

Therefore, I don't see the problem is due to cached files or upgrading to Yosemite. I'm using a brand new system and saw this error. Hopefully it's something that will be fixed in the next update. I clicked "Report" error so at least they know it's a problem.

Also note that I have Firefox open with 10 tabs, Thunderbird, 10 Text Edit files, and the console.

I have a macbook air in my department that just started giving this error this week. It was upgrade to yosemite a couple months ago. I just tried running the Yosemite Cache Cleaner and a few minutes after, the machine restarted on on it's own for the first time and the message popped back up again. So I'm not convinced it's just a left-over file issue. At this point, I'm leaning toward reverting it back to Mavericks until this gets resolved.

My local apple authorized service provider have been looking into it with Apple technicians and it is a software issue with Yosemite. The solution, how lame it may be, is to downgrade to Mavericks and not upgrade to Yosemite. That is Apples solution to the problem. Also, Apple have informed the service provider that they are aware of the issue and that they are working on a fix for Yosemite.

The pixel error I have is a separate issue and the screen will be replaced.

I have a 21.5 iMac Mid 2011, that was constantly locking with the video almost daily since I have upgraded to Yosemite. Using System Preferences --> Accessibility --> Display --> Reduce Transparency, I can confirm that I have not had an issue since doing this. (where's that wood to knock on?).

Hopefully this will help others having issues with this.

This may have been shared before but I thought I would add it for the benefit of those who have not seen the article. http://www.macissues.com/2014/11/04/transparency-and-graphics-switching-in-yosem ite-affecting-macbook-pros/

I updated to 10.10.2 earlier and I no longer see the error popup window. However, in Firefox 35.0.1 the screen freezes for three seconds when loading the following website, then releases and scrolls freely, but the video (within the iPhone frame) does not play. It appears to be an ogg format video. I can view other ogg videos.

I have a laptop that I updated to 10.10.2 and can view the above website with video playing fine in Firefox 35.0.1.

Troubling that the video is not able to play properly on the iMac. The freezing is also of concern. However, I feel somewhat better without the error popup appearing.

Anyone else update?

I updated to 10.10.2 as well, and I can confirm that the recurring popup didn't show up after applying the update, rebooting and logging in.

Following that, I rebooted into the Yosemite Recovery and performed a permissions repair. Wrong permissions were detected for "displaypolicyd" but this time "GPURestartReporter" did not show up among the files with wrong permissions.

Do you think that doing something to fix "GPURestartReporter" recurring permission problems (as reported above by dsquareddan on page 6) is why the pop-up does not come up again and again anymore?

In any case, I am not convinced that this took care of the original problem. Sometimes, when opening the lid of my rMBP (mid '12) a screen of colorful "noise" (think TV static, but with colors) artifacts appear for just an instant. I have not tried to reproduce this, but surely it is not normal. At this point, I should note that I had my logic board replaced about a month ago and this "noise" thing happened again since, if it was a hardware fault, it persevered even after the logic board replacement.

Well no issues for me on a mid 2014 MBP 15 Retina. I will test and check back. Im always connected, mostly, to an external screen and it most likely happened when not connected to an external screen (maybe because with an external screen the nvidia cad is being used? )

Not sure anyway. Hope this update solves the issue. I also cleared PRAM since I had now with the update scrolling issues when swiping right to return to the previews page.

This i fixed, cleared cache, fixed permissions and reset safari.
