iPhone 5s screen is white

I just replaced a scratched camera. When I tried to power the phone on the whole screen was white. I asked the iFixit community what to do about it and they said to restore with iTunes. I tried it and it says "The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (14)."

iPhone 5s, iOS 8

Are you certain the device was reassembled correctly? If not open it up & double check that everything is seated correctly. Look for any broken connectors or torn ribbon cables etc. If the switches & screen do not fit snugly there may be something out of alignment.

You will also need to search the error message…

Apple have this page that suggests your USB cable could be the fault or it could be hardware in the device (possible considering it was taken it apart).

Resolve iOS update and restore errors

This suggests old thread suggests disabling AV or firewall?!

The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (14). [Help me]

You could also take it to an Apple store & ask them to restore it - it will rule out your Mac as the issue, however the warranty will have been voided now that it has been opened.

In what sense? The screen is still white or iOS won't restore from iTunes?

To be clear this is what you have tried… (this is what the first link suggests).

  1. Tried other cables
  2. Tried other USB ports
  3. Tried another computer
  4. Disabled any security software on the computer(s)
  5. Try 2 more times over USB
  6. Confirmed iTunes isn't being conflicted by security settings

If you have done all that the last thing Apple suggest is contact Apple support

Personally I'm unsure if the device is damaged or if the Mac is unable to restore iTunes. Have you taken it apart again & checked that all the connections are correct?

What was the second computer you used?

You can also try DFU mode on the phone…

I just don't think that will work if the USB is damaged or iTunes is unable to work.

See if you can make anything out on the screen, shine a torch at it too, it may be that the backlight is not working, in which case you may be able to see the UI by reflecting light off the screen.

Did you do a normal restore e.g. iTunes downloaded the software for you and you didn't use an old .ipsw file?

I don't know how you can diagnose just the screen, it could just be failing to startup at all.

DFU mode doesn't show anything on screen so you can't use that to test it.

The reset may help…
