Selecting Aperture images for iPhone

I have an Aperture library with a smart album of 222 pictures [5* and picks] and want to have that album be the source of my iPhone6 photographs - but each time I try to select that album, it defaults to the total number of images [i.e. originals and rejected versions], not the 222 images that actually appear on the screen in the browser.

Is it even possible to select only a limited number of pictures to sync with iPhone? I tried to create an album of only those selected 222 images and for some reason the sync feature of iPhone still picked out 500+ images to move = and I didn't want them, only the few I selected.

I have finally given up and exported those 222 to a folder on the computer instead but would like to know whether I'm doing it wrong.

Hi Victoria,

It can work — or, at least, I can report that it does work as expected for me. (iPhone 6+, IOS 8.0.2, Aperture 3.5.1, iTunes 11.4.18, OS 10.9.5) I can select any Smart Albums in the "Albums and Events" pane on the "Photos" tab of the iTunes display when my phone is selected in the "Devices" section of the sidebar, and when I click the "Apply" button on the lower right, the Smart Albums are read by iTunes and their contents are synced to my iPhone. Once the Smart Albums are read, iTunes displays the number of photos it will sync on the "Sync photos from 'Aperture' " line at the top of the phone browser.

To start trouble-shooting why this is not working for you, I suggest, first, repairing your Library. Then confirm that the Smart Album(s) you want are the only containers selected in the "Albums and Events" pane of iTunes. This can be done by collapsing each of the top-level containers that has an empty check-box. Any container that has either a check or a minus sign in the check-box contains some Images selected for syncing. Confirm that there is nothing selected that you don't want selected.

Do the 500+ Images that show up uninvited have anything in common?

these settings are working well for me (on a different iPhone model):

Can it be, that your smart settings HUD does include additional rules, combined with "Any" instead of all? Try to switch the "Any" to "All" in the upper left corner.

Hopefully Kirby's advice will do the trick. If not, remove the iPod Photo Cache from your library.

I did check the Any/All = and made sure it was All. And I did make sure that only that one album was selected == what it showed in itunes for import purposes was the whole 735 or 500 images - the 222 picked ones and the ones 'behind' = I'll repair the Library and try again and report back = many thanks for the help.

Okay, I quit both iTunes and Aperture, opened Aperture and rebuilt it [both options] and quit again. Reopened the library and created another smart album = Picks plus 5* - All. Still happening.

What kind of stacks do you have in your smart album? Are these version stacks? All images in the stack sharing the same original file? Or are these stacks of different photos?

Not sure I understand...the whole library has about 900 pics total [show all] - I work on some/all and on some assign 5* to them = and then I hit stack pick - that's how I got to 222 -- if I take off the stack pick selection then I am back to the 700#

well I was just testing things again and will have to rebuild again I gather = I hit on Projects, images are in them. But I hit on Photos and select Show All and double check I don't have anything else in the selector and now no photos show at all!! How weird is that?? I'm going to rebuild - and try again.

Will report back [I dont' understand the stacks Q above...these are photos from a Canon and my iPhone = and one thing that has happened, that we can't [Aperture team at Apple] figure out is why in some cases [mostly iPHone shots] versions don't stack. There are some stacks with 3-5 images in them but I assume[d?] that meant there would only be one image that is selected from each set in a stack [I have Aperture set to auto stack versons]

I had not done that but just did. Reopened the Aplibrary and 222 images are in the 5*Pick smart album...I then reopened iTunes and selected the Pick5* and it comes up again with 735 photos to import.

What I am a bit confused about, is how you are creating stacks of similar images. Kirby could probably explain this much better.

Aperture has several ways to stack related images. You can stack images automatically, when you create new versions of the same image. Or when you import, you can have images stacked, that have been taken at the same time. Using "Stack pick" does not make much sense to me, if I do not know, what you stacked.

I asked this, because I remember vaguely that there used to be a bug, that images in version stacks could not be synced independently. But I tested right now with my iPhone and could not reproduce this bug.

I set up my libraries to auto stack on making new versions. So the version made ends up being the pick as far as I know = I did do a test smart album selecting only 5* and Adjustments applied and got 308 images - I will do some checking and see if I can maybe create a new library and try again....it may have been me or the cache thing...thanks.

Just check with a new, small library for testing. That would tell us if the problem is caused by your current library or not.

Do all images in your stacks have the same rating of ***** ?

I'll do that == this was a library I created via Export of images from another larger one. I exported [I thought] only original and version but maybe did ti wrong. I'll try again with a new library and see how it works. The actual # of images with 5* is not the same as the total # of images so no, they don't all ahve that rating.

I selected the smart album with 222 images in it selected those 222 and exported versions to new library - then made sure there was no iPod photo cache [see pic] and selected it in the iTunes for import = well there were 500+ to import, not the 222. Oh well, I did get the 222 images [only] to export to a folder and have chosen that folder as the source for my iPhone-iTunes selection of photos....
