MPlayer X Mac Virus!

Please help me!

I recently very foolishly tried to torrent FL Studio, and i have learnt my lesson.

When i searched for it via Pirate Bay, i was re-directed to another page which told me that my video player was out-dated. Im no fool (within reason), I know that this was obviously a virus but i thought that, being on a mac, i would be safe. For some reason i decided to click it, and as it said you had to open the .dmg file i proceeded, thinking, 'oh, if i don't open the file, i can just bypass this and carry on and not get any viruses'. It instantly downloaded and i didn't notice an instant change but then after about 10 minutes, my Facebook started messing up, and i lost connectivity to the server. Now every time i try to open a page it says, 'Safari can't verify the identity of the server'. On further attempts at loading Facebook, i am presented with a different layout, one that seems not properly de-coded.

I have been on other threads where people discuss similar issues regarding MPlayer X viruses, but they all are referring to popup ads, whereas mine seems to be something to do with server connections (i could be wrong).

I have downloaded Clam Xav and have updated it, then done a full scan of every file on my computer but it hasn't found any viruses…

Maybe it isn't looking for the right files?

Many thanks in advance!

Although there has been a recent iWorm infection caused by various torrents from PirateBay, ClamXav has been updated to find those files that we know about, so it would appear you're OK from a malware standpoint.

Previous infections involving the legitimate MPlayerX software were caused by adware that was included in the installer, so I would look into that next.

A colleague of mine who is a recognized malware guru here in the forum has developed a simple, safe and speedy app called AdwareMedic which will identify any currently known adware for you and offer to remove it if desired.

Apple blocks these outbreaks using their "XProtect", an anti malware system that's built in to Mac OS X.

While I agree in principle that XProtect blocks all commonly found malware that can impact OS X and it's applications, there is no known OS X malware called "MacPlayer X" so it would have to be something else. Also, XProtect is totally ineffective against all but one form of adware (OSX.FkCodec.i).
