Lost ability to choose 3440x1440 resolution

I have an LG 34UM95 connected via TB on a Late 2012 mac mini.

After the Yosemite install, I no longer have the option of choosing 3440x1440 resolution in the Displays preferences.

I did do the Option->Scaled bit to see the extended list of choices, but nothing higher than 2560x1080 shows up.

Can I get my 3440x1440 resolution back?

Well, that was fun:

I eventually got it working, but not without almost hosing my system first!

I worte a blog post about how I managed to get my 3440x1440 resolution (thanks for posting a pre-patched version of the kext josh 🙂

the blog post is here, incase you want to read more: https://jonathansblog.co.uk/lg-34um95-osx-yosemite-resolution-bug

I'll post the steps here too, just incase:

1) download kexbeast

2) download josh's pre-pathced kext

3) open a terminal

cd Desktop

sudo chown -R root:wheel AppleIntel*

sudo chmod -R 775 AppleIntel*

-- this bit was key - if you dont do this part, then the kext wont load as it doesn't have the correct permissions

4) run KextBeast

5) reboot 😀

Ok so I followed these instructions meticulously a couple of times, first using a patched kext however that just made things 10 times worse for me - jittery screen, mouse lag etc etc. The solution for me in the end was simply to grab a copy of the AppleIntelFramebufferCapri.kext (without patching) from another MacMini (same model) running mavericks in place of the patched version as in step 2 of your instructions.

Thanks for all the help guys, much appreciated!

Can someone please post the original file from Mavericks? I have gone through too many patched and unpatched files and every time I try too patch one I get the graphics problem and have to reinstall the OS. I don't have another machine that has the original .kext file so I'm out of luck there. the fixed file seems to be lost in the many cross-posts.

Burt, try this link here https://www.dropbox.com/s/53trsm2m4v6teb0/AppleIntelFramebufferCapri.kext.zip?dl =0

This is the Mavericks driver from a MacMini (Late 2012) that I simply dropped into place using the KextBeast utility in Yosemite and it worked. Quick update to jonathan's blog instructions above:

1) download kexbeast (http://www.tonymacx86.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=32)

2) download mavericks capri kext and extract to desktop (https://www.dropbox.com/s/53trsm2m4v6teb0/AppleIntelFramebufferCapri.kext.zip?dl =0)

3) open terminal and enter the following command (simply copy/paste):

cd Desktop && sudo chown -R root:wheel AppleIntel* && sudo chmod -R 775 AppleIntel*

4) run KextBeast

5) reboot 😀

Just found an easy fix for my external monitor and wanted to share. The 4k option had initially appeared when I first plugged it in. After Yosemite and changing the resolution I couldn't get it back. I found this article http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13996 . By going into safe mode I was able to retrieve 4k resolution as an option again. Once I reset normally it defaulted to that option again. Previously I did try to copy over the Display folder and respective ".kext" that was suggested. For whatever reason safe mode allowed it to actually take effect. Hope it works for you all too. Just another bandaid I guess... Be well.

I can confirm that the patch works fine on my machine after the 10.10.1 update with YUFENG66's note about setting boot-args-kext-dev-mode = 1, so updated instructions from above:
