do I need to upgrade from yosemite public beta 6 to the final?

The release has a build number of 389. If you have an earlier one then you should install the release.

Ok. I have Yosemite Beta 6, which means build 388b. In this case, based on what was said, I should upgrade, but the Apple Store says I already have Yosemite installed? Should I upgrade nonetheless?

Im thinking its better to maybe wait to download from "updates" page...

Will wait 2 or so days... If it doesn't come up I may click 'continue' and download the full version from scratch

Here is a screenshot. That says we should use the updates page... Some users say it will never pop up in updates... I think playing the waiting game for +-2 days is okay, after all we are basically running yosemite anyways.

If it's not showing on your Updates page under Purchases, it won't show later as an update, because it's not an update, it's an upgrade.

There is no reason why they cant patch Public beta up to official OSX Yosemite version.

Infact those are the instructions suggested by apple in the screenshot i provided. It could show up in purchases when its officially patched up to same version as official release.

Off course I could be wrong... I just don't think it should be excluded as a possibility as that is what apple is suggesting?

Where do I find the build number? I don't see it in 'About this Mac'

You're going to see that same screenshot no matter what you do, as long as you have any version of Yosemite previously installed.

If you want to wait, that's your option.

Apple image top left corner->About this Mac ->system Report ->software

After you do the "About This Mac," click on where it says, "Version 10.10."

Looks like all the experienced posters here are agreeing with you. (you yourself seem to be very involved in these forums also).

Obviously you would see that message if you have an older version of public beta or newer... Either way you need to upgrade updates systematically... I think thats a non issue..

But I am starting to feel that all the experienced members including you are unanimously saying to download the official release version if full.

Can I ask? Were you in public beta? Did you download Yosemite official release? Was everything smooth coming from public beta?

And, click the button marked, "View in the Mac App Store," then download. It's a full installer that can be used on SL, Lion, ML or any previous version of Yosemite.
