Why oh Why would you change the maximize button!!!

Just installed Yosemite, and noticed that the functionality of the green maximize button has been fundamentally changed. It has now been turned into a "full screen app mode" button. No longer can you just expand the contents of the window to fit the contents or your screen size. Why would you change something that has existed that way for 20 years? Every OS, on every platform has this button work the same way, but not on Yosemite. I'm just dumbfounded...

This feature was talked about back in June when Yosemite was introduced at the WWDC.

It is a little redundant and outdated with the introduction of Mission Control (4 finger swipe up) at least 3 OS X versions ago.

I'm all for more ways to do things, but removing something for no reason doesn't make sense. Especially when this feature exists across all computing platforms. It would be like changing the behavior of closing a laptop lid to shutting down a computer and removing the sleep option. There is no logical reason.

As for mission control and the up swipe, thats great and all if your apps are in full screen mode, but most people don't work that way. Full screen is great for ipads and phones. but my issue is wanting to use multiple apps on the screen at the same time. Microsoft ran into these same issues when introducing that horrible windows 8 tile view. I work with 3 screens at work and it used to be simple changing from work to laptop mode, but now I need to manually adjust every window. They sell all these giant high-res screens (see new iMac), yet we are supposed to only use 1 app at a time on screen?? no.

I don't necessarily agree with your first statement, but maybe you have insight.

You are missing the point. Why go maximize window which is essentially full screen which will override any other open window on your desktop. Full screen allows for quick switching between apps that are "maximized."

I will admit I use one 15'' MacBookPro so I have no understanding of your issues with multiple screens. I do all my work as well as my main browser on the Desktop with real estate to spare, and always have at least 6 full screen apps running at all times. I never use the maximize button.

There may well be third party apps to bring back your functionality.

thanks, also to reply to your statement : "You are missing the point. Why go maximize window which is essentially full screen which will override any other open window on your desktop. Full screen allows for quick switching between apps that are "maximized."

When the apps are just maximized vs full screen, you can still see the menu bar, clock, etc. You can also see the dock and notification icons. You can drag and drop between windows, you can have multiple windows open for each app. For example, in Mail if you are in full screen, you cannot view the "activity viewer" window. You can't open an email and then cut and paste something in your email list, you can't alt-tab between open windows, only "desktop windows". If you want to type something to someone over skype or Messages that you are reading on a webpage, you can't have them both on the screen at the same time.. etc.

It's really a matter of choice, and I'm glad they didn't completely remove that. (would have been nice to have it mentioned somewhere though)
