Why oh Why would you change the maximize button!!!

Just installed Yosemite, and noticed that the functionality of the green maximize button has been fundamentally changed. It has now been turned into a "full screen app mode" button. No longer can you just expand the contents of the window to fit the contents or your screen size. Why would you change something that has existed that way for 20 years? Every OS, on every platform has this button work the same way, but not on Yosemite. I'm just dumbfounded...

I agree completely. To me the zoom feature to allow the window to completely fill the screen is far more useful than full screen. It is extremely frustrating that they would hide it the way they did by making you press option along with clicking. It would be nice if they made it configurable where you could change which was function is the default and which requires pressing option (hint hint to anyone from Apple reading this).

This seems totally broken, especially with Office, where you need the toolbar (or whatever that top menu is officially called) at the top for basic functionality.

No combination of key strokes keeps that bar in place when maximizing a screen in ppt, excel or word, and it is very awkward to get out of full screen. A random sampling of apps suggests at least three different ux approaches to getting out of the full screen mode.

Do you mean the “Menu Bar?” If so, that will be there as long as you are not in Full Screen. Even then, it will appear when you move the mouse to the top of the screen.

Or, do you mean the Title Bar (which has limited functionality).

Apps that have not been updated to deal with the new UI, like Powerpoint, still can use the old method of exiting Full Screen, i.e. clicking the blue “Full Screen” button at the right end of the Menu bar.

User uploaded fileWord responds to Esc to exit Full Screen, but Powerpoint does not because it bogarts Esc to exit the Slide Show. Why it can’t differentiate between when in Slide Show mode and Edit mode, you’ll have to ask Microsoft.

Thanks for this. My problem is that the green button now gets you into "full screen" not "maximized leaving the <very top bar, the one with the apple on the far left>" still visible (which is what it used to do). The problem with hiding the <very top bar, the one with the apple on the far left> is that it often contains menu items you cannot otherwise access easily. If you are using a program you don't use often, it is hard to remember what the options are, why make it hard to see that.

I found the blue button you indicated- it feels like weird ux to have the exit capability on the extreme top right when the entrance is the top left (especially on a big monitor).

What I am asking for is that there is a system wide switch to make <option>green (i.e. 'Old") be the default when you hit any green maximize button. I can see arguments both ways, but don't make the traditional, rational, behavior require an exception every click without a choice.

thanks again!

No, there isn't. I asked them for it and they said no.

You ou have to hold down the option key when you click the green button, now, or double-click the title bar.

I contacted Apple with this message, hopefully they'll get back to me, if at all:

I don't like how the green zoom button goes into full-screen mode when you click on it. I have a dual monitor setup, and this may be useful in single screen mode, it completely blocks out the other screen and makes it useless. I realize that there are key commands like opt/alt+shift and clicking on the green button to maximize to the full desktop real-estate, and I know there are window management apps out there, however, this is just one of those core user interface elements and behaviors that should be configurable from the get go --- especially since this feature has changed two times in the last three major versions of the operating system. Come on guys, you're suppose to get this right the 1st time and stick with it. Please allow us to configure it.
