Server App 4.0 stuck on "Upgrading Calendar Service"

Hi,

i just updated to Yosemite and then to Server 4.0. During the upgrade the Server App gets stuck on updating the calendar service. I really do not use that service. Any idea how I can get this to get past this so I can actually configure the server from within Server App?

Mac mini, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4), also have an AmigaONE

mcapurro, I don't completely follow your description of your computer's configuration. What do you mean by "running overflow..."?

Did you configure Server.app to store service data on an external volume? If so, that's where your logs are likely to be. So for example, if /Volumes/External is where you told Server.app to store service data, look in /Volumes/External/Library/Server/Calendar and Contacts/Logs/ for any log files indicating an error, especially xpg_ctl.log and migration.log.

Also, what does this command output?

cat /Library/Preferences/com.apple.servermgr_calendar.plist

That will tell you which volume the calendar and contacts services are configured to use.

I think you got it. I have a 2TB USB drive attached to my MacBook Pro 'Server'. There is a directory on that USB drive /2GB Server Drive/Library/Server/Calendar and Contacts/ but there is only a Data folder in there. Inside of that folder I have Database.xpg (directory), Documents (directory), memberships_cache, proxies.sqlite, resources.xml and zoneinfo (directory). I just don't see a .log file. Could it be hidden? Search on the entire machine doesn't find an xpg_ctl.log file. From the command, it looks like it's configured to use the Calendars and Contacts folder on the USB drive. It's probably not getting far enough in the install to write a log but I'm just guessing. Any ideas?

Output:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">

<plist version="1.0">

<dict>

<key>ServerRoot</key>

<string>/Volumes/2GB Server Drive/Library/Server/Calendar and Contacts</string>

</dict>

</plist>

Well, I think I solved my immediate problem anyway. I just deleted the Server Application completely, kept the original directories in Calendar and Contacts and reinstalled the server software. It's no longer stuck on updating calendar but seems to be just sitting in 'Preparing Calendar service'. Not sure if that's really progress but it's something different.

I also has the OS X Server 4.0 installer on the migration stuck on "Upgrading Calendar server" overnight.

Since I do not use the Calendar nor Contacts on this Server, I made empty directories in /Library/Server/Calendar and Contacts/ for the Data/ and Config/ as mentioned above (logged into a Terminal as root). After rebooting, and re-starting the OS X Server 4.0 app and logging in, the Upgrade process succeeded quickly.

I was helped by Apple Enterprise Support:

Delete the Server App, Empty Trash and Re Download Server App

You are going to do that EACH TIME you delete one of the Service Folders:

If you are stuck on Calendars and Contacts...go to:

  • HD/Library/Server/Calendar and Contacts and delete THAT FOLDER.
  • Delete Server and Re Download Server App.
  • Open Server

If it stalls on another service..Go to:

  • HD/Library/Server/"SERVICE YOU ARE STUCK ON" and delete THAT SERVICE FOLDER.
  • Delete Server AGAIN.... and Re Download Server App.
  • Open Server

DO NOT DELETE "PostgreSQL" folder or other folders which you are not familiar with!!!!! - Only the Service related folders.

It took me 3 rounds of this till it completed the Server Setup!!

There COULD be a sudo command to restore factory settings but Enterprise did not recommend this as it may have only applied to the OLDER server apps/OS and might completely break your current server settings.

Had the issue as well where I was getting stuck at Updating Calendar Service. We also do not use Calendars or Contacts at this particular client.

I tried renaming the Config and Data folders but that didn't work. I realized looking at logs that the server was originally setup with the service data stored on an Xserve RAID that is no longer with the agency and was still trying to locate that directory. Inside of /Library/Preferences... there is a plist called "com.apple.servermgr_calendar.plist" that was still pointing to this old location as the service data directory. I used Terminal and vi to edit the plist to point the service data back to the main boot drive at /HD/Library/Server/Calendar and Contacts and launched Server app again and everything loaded and was ready to be configured.
