Java SE 6 on Yosemite?

I just updated my mac to Yosemite and the following message keeps popping up "To open 'this Java application' you need to install the legacy Java SE 6 runtime." No matter if I click "ok" or "More Info..." (the only two options) it keeps coming up. Is there some way I can find out what app is triggering the message or fix the issue?

Java 8 is the recommended version for Yosemite: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jre8-downloads-2133155.h tml

What I did was go to the Oracle site and do some digging. I came up with the advice to empty the temporary file cache in Java. I did it, and as of now it worked!

Java SE 6 on Yosemite?

I can tell you what worked for me. I installed Java 6 opened my apps that wouldn't before, closed them down. Installed Java 8 opened those same apps and it works. I don't know why only that it must be voodoo.

Blue, do you refer to Jay's posting from page 3 and did you use the link which was posted there?

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/19563766/eclipse-kepler-for-os-x-mavericks-re quest-java-se-6

It would be great if somebody who is more familiar with Java and Yosemite could write a summary for the not so tech savvy people like me 😉; answering if there is a way to satisfy java-demanding programs like Adobe CS5 with an up-to-date version of Java, avoiding Java 6 security issues.

Does the link above describe a method how to avoid Java 6? Imho the article describes a way to use Java7 instead of 6... is the same method usable for Java8 too?

Thx in advance! Having a new machine with a fresh Yosemite, starting the setup with installing CW5 Photoshop and ending up installing Java6 feels just horrible...

Hi Lea,

Yes, that's the link I used. A summary would be that yes, following the procedure in that link means that you can use an up-to-date version of Java to satisfy CS5's requirements. The same procedure applies whether you're using Java 7 or Java 8 (I already had Java 7 installed for my software development work).

I was in exactly the same position as you - I'd upgraded to Yosemite, and Apple (rightly) removed the old Java 6 as a security risk. Modern Java installations are much more secure (& capable). You might see some plugins refuse to launch with the new Java version - Scriptographer, for example - but Illustrator and the other CS5 apps now launch, at least, and they can manage plugin issues themselves.

Definitely don't install Java 6, whatever you do! How do you feel about the doing the stackoverflow procedure?

Blue, thanks a lot for the quick reply.

I seriously consider to upgrade my Adobe Photoshop version from CS5 to at least CS6 to avoid all the java headaches. Not blaming Apple here for removing a potential security risk - just an unpleasant surprise to figure out that a piece of software with regularly use needs such a 'flawed' java version including all related security risks... and Im amazed to read in many other places how easy people install java6 and are happy that everything is running 'perfectly' *cough 😉

I have this problem too since updating to Yosemite, I can't use Photoshop CS5. I followed what this user suggested

This solved my question by TomNYC on Oct 17, 2014 2:21 PM

I got the same message when trying to start Photoshop CS5 after upgrading to Yosemite. I went to this page and clicked on the blue Download button, and then installed the older version of Java. Now Photoshop works.

And when I saved it to my desktop then tried to install it, I got this error message.

Any suggestions would be welcome. Thank you

The same situation here. Neither version 7 or 8 (from Oracle) worked, but SE 6 (or Java for OS X 2014-001) did work.

However, to avoid the risk of having an old unsupported version installed on my Mac and without info on how to uninstall it, I just removed from HD>System>Library>Java>JavaVirtualMachines the 1.6.0.jdk file, and from HD>System>Library>Java>Support>CoreDeploy.bundle>Contents the JavaAppletPlugin.plugin. Not very elegant, but it seems to work. If I do the "java -version" cmd in Terminal, it confirms that Java is not installed.

Does anyone knows if this is good enough to avoid any risks? or perhaps is better (and safe) to remove the whole Java folder from my Library? Thanks!

Hey there to all .... I recently also have been having trouble with an app of mine that wouldn't open ... Vuze.... After reading all of the posts from the beginning of this thread I noticed a lot of your issues were with Adobe software..... I have the Master CS6 but I haven't had any issues opening any of them. Anyway... if you guys still haven't fixed your issue try this type of approach.... with my particular program that wouldn't open I found out that it actually uses its own local version of Java rather than the system's version of Java which in my case I didn't need to install or downgrade the newest Java in general. However, I did need to install the local version that Vuze could operate with... heres the info about that ... I don't know where you would get the versions needed for Adobe but maybe this will help anyone if you try looking from this perspective... this is a post i copied from a Vuze forum from one of the staff members of this company. Hope you guys can fix it :/

No, grab the Java 1.7 installer from

http://sourceforge.net/projects/azureus/files/vuze/Vuze_5400/Vuze_5400_Installer _Java7.dmg/download

Vuze will run with 1.8 (and 1.9...) but we don't have a prebuilt installer yet for those versions.
