Macbook Air (mid-2012) won't pair with iPhone 6

I didn't see anyone ask this so far.

I checked the criteria for Continuity between devices. My Macbook Air and my iPhone 6 (obviously) meet the criteria. (By the way, I wasn't able to AirDrop ever because my devices wouldn't pair).

1) I make sure both the Macbook and iPhone has Hand-Off checked. I am running OS X Yosemite & iOS 8.

2) I turn Bluetooth on for both devices

3) Macbook shows up on iPhone list on Bluetooth and vice versa.

4) Try to connect on Macbook, clicked "Pair" the iPhone. The message comes up to check the code and pair if the code matches.

5) I check iPhone. Code matches.

6) I pair and it would say the connection was unsuccessful because the MacBook isn't within range. Ok. I did all suggestions Apple gave on the help page like moving the device closer or finding the interference. I cannot see any interference. Both the iPhone and Macbook connect to my same Bluetooth speaker perfectly fine (just for the record). And the phone is literally a few inches away from the Macbook.

That doesn't work, then I tried again and at one point, the popup message changed to "not connected because Macbook Air not supported".

Clearly, this doesn't just "work" for me and it's really annoying me. Is anyone else having this problem? I was looking forward to this feature for months.

I want to do the last step on the Support page: where I sign out from iCloud to sign back in (on the Mac) in order to get the devices to connect, but it keeps telling me it'll delete files, contacts, reminders, calendar, etc from my Mac. If I agree to this, will I be able to restore these files after signing back into iCloud? I rather know now before losing the files permanently.

Yes. It will delete them your phone, but when you log in again they will all sync back. Do NOT choose to leave Contacts on your phone if asked; if you do it will duplicate them when you log back in. While that can be fixed, it is a real pain to do so. Note that it can also take a while to sync back and there is no indication that it is in progress.

My Macbook won't show up on my iPhone 5s running 8.0.2 but my iPhone shows up on my Mac. I can transfer files from my mac to my phone but not vice versa. I am running Yosemite 10.10. I have a mid-2012 Macbook Air and it has bluetooth 4.0. So everything should be compatible. I cannot figure out why it won't work and cannot find anyone offering a solution yet.

Let me know if you have any advice.

I am having the same issue. I have tried several times adjusting settings and reading the article Get help using Continuity with iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite and the calls appear on my screen but the speaker/microphone ability is ONLY working on my phone. I know my speakers and microphone work on my mac cause I tested FaceTime after trying to make a call. I wonder if it being a HOTSPOT is a requirement. I am on an unlimited data plan so that is not an option with my carrier. But I was never able to pair the iPhone with the iMac 😟

Hey, guys,

I was having the same problem here: iPhone 6 couldn't find my rMBP Mid 2014 and my Macbook could find it, but couldn't pair.

After trying a zilion different things just to see the Handoff finally working, this simple thing solved my problem:

Signing Out and Signing In again in the iCloud on the Macbook. Simple as that.

Really hope it works for you too.
