Macbook Air (mid-2012) won't pair with iPhone 6

I didn't see anyone ask this so far.

I checked the criteria for Continuity between devices. My Macbook Air and my iPhone 6 (obviously) meet the criteria. (By the way, I wasn't able to AirDrop ever because my devices wouldn't pair).

1) I make sure both the Macbook and iPhone has Hand-Off checked. I am running OS X Yosemite & iOS 8.

2) I turn Bluetooth on for both devices

3) Macbook shows up on iPhone list on Bluetooth and vice versa.

4) Try to connect on Macbook, clicked "Pair" the iPhone. The message comes up to check the code and pair if the code matches.

5) I check iPhone. Code matches.

6) I pair and it would say the connection was unsuccessful because the MacBook isn't within range. Ok. I did all suggestions Apple gave on the help page like moving the device closer or finding the interference. I cannot see any interference. Both the iPhone and Macbook connect to my same Bluetooth speaker perfectly fine (just for the record). And the phone is literally a few inches away from the Macbook.

That doesn't work, then I tried again and at one point, the popup message changed to "not connected because Macbook Air not supported".

Clearly, this doesn't just "work" for me and it's really annoying me. Is anyone else having this problem? I was looking forward to this feature for months.

To determine your Mac's Bluetooth version

  1. Click the menu.
  2. Select About This Mac.
  3. Click on the More Info... button.
  4. Click on the System Report... button.
  5. Select Bluetooth from the sidebar on the left, underneath "HardwareUser uploaded file."
  6. Scan down the list of information until you find "LMP Version."

If your Mac is equipped with Bluetooth 4.0, LMP Version will say 0x6. Anything lower than that is an older version of Bluetooth.

Does your Mac come with Bluetooth 4.0, or are you going to need a new system to take full advantage of Yosemite and iOS 8

Yes, Lawrence Finch is correct.

I have MBP. If I open my Bluetooth Preferences I can watch the activity.

I am on the same wifi network with bluetooth enabled on my iPhone 5s and MBP.

If I start a message on my iPhone a separate little dock appears o my MBP.

When I click on that Message icon in the 'little dock' then and only then I will see that both my iPhone and MBP are connected in my MBP Bluetooth Preferences.

This happens momentarily and will go back to 'Not Connected' as soon as they are done talking to each other.

So yes, it does work.

Mid-2012 MacAir, iPhone 5s, iPad Air.

Checked all the settings - all are lined up to allow handoff (incl. having the appropriate Bluetooth hardware), but I can't get it to work. It seemed to work Mac-to-Phone for a brief moment (a Safari handoff), but now that's stopped. Handoff also won't work from iPad to iPhone anymore either (used to till today). I tried everything on the help page you linked to and everything everyone here suggested, including logging out of iCloud on all devices, but no dice.

Also, the Mac Air doesn't see the iPhone (or iPad) in AirDrop nor do either iDevice see the Mac, but the phone and pad see each other. No idea what's wrong.

I guess I'll wait till Monday. If it still doesn't work, I'll have to take a trip to the Apple Store...
