Macbook Air (mid-2012) won't pair with iPhone 6

I didn't see anyone ask this so far.

I checked the criteria for Continuity between devices. My Macbook Air and my iPhone 6 (obviously) meet the criteria. (By the way, I wasn't able to AirDrop ever because my devices wouldn't pair).

1) I make sure both the Macbook and iPhone has Hand-Off checked. I am running OS X Yosemite & iOS 8.

2) I turn Bluetooth on for both devices

3) Macbook shows up on iPhone list on Bluetooth and vice versa.

4) Try to connect on Macbook, clicked "Pair" the iPhone. The message comes up to check the code and pair if the code matches.

5) I check iPhone. Code matches.

6) I pair and it would say the connection was unsuccessful because the MacBook isn't within range. Ok. I did all suggestions Apple gave on the help page like moving the device closer or finding the interference. I cannot see any interference. Both the iPhone and Macbook connect to my same Bluetooth speaker perfectly fine (just for the record). And the phone is literally a few inches away from the Macbook.

That doesn't work, then I tried again and at one point, the popup message changed to "not connected because Macbook Air not supported".

Clearly, this doesn't just "work" for me and it's really annoying me. Is anyone else having this problem? I was looking forward to this feature for months.

Larry when I said "exact" I meant my MacAir won't connect via Bluetooth AND my handoff doesn't work. Now given the hardware that I mentioned I am using by default it qualifies for the technology so there was no reason to mention your article. Weather or not a the two issues are connected is irrelevant. They don't work and that stupid article is simply a laundry list of qualifications for hardware. I had a tech from AppleCare help me on the phone and we did all of that paring and discussing garbage.

I saved you and the rest of the tortured souls on here my long story. The fact is the software isn't functioning and requires a fix. If it wasn't ready for release it should nit have been offered. These are expensive luxury items where there is little room for failure.

Lastly, I will say if apple doesn't read these threads they should start. Right about now the Galexy is looking good.

So as far as I know continuity will work without having the devices paired with each other but only to a certain limit i believe. Continuity is working between apps like safari, mail, calendar and and iMessage. Other features I'm not sure about. I thought the devices had to be paired to use airdrop but they don't. As long as both devices have bluetooth enabled and are set to share with everyone it'll work. Note you should also be on the same iCloud account. Other features like sms relay and phone call relay will have to wait till iOS 8.1 is released. Also i don't get the continuity icon on my iPhone tho just my macbook. Theres still a problem there.

Lawrence,

I have an iPhone 6+ and Macbook Pro mid 2012 running OSX 10.10. From my Macbook I can pair my phone in the Bluetooth advanced setting menu. On the Macbook I initially get the message 'connected', than the message 'disconnected'.

If I want to connect (after pairing) from my iPhone 6 I get the message 'Connection Unseccesfull "This MacBook Pro" is not supported.'

IIt's the same issue for all of us. The bluetooth doesn't connect between iPhone 6 and MacBooks. ALSO and as you said unrelated the handoff doesn't work. Handoff works from iPad to iPhone 6 for me but not the MacBook. Now you say the two issues are unrelated. I say who cares they are both issues. Do you know how to remedy?

That won't work by design, nor is it needed for any supported service. This has been posted at least a dozen times in this thread, not to mention thousands of times overall in the Apple support forums, and described in Knowledge Base articles such as: iOS: Supported Bluetooth profiles. While this KB article does not specifically exclude iOS to computer connections, it doesn't list them as a supported profile either. iOS has never supported peer-to-peer BlueTooth connections to computers (Mac or Windows), and that hasn't changed with iOS 8 and Yosemite.

The good news is that it isn't needed for any supported continuity service. While some of the new services (Handoff, Message, Instant Hotspot, Phone calling) use BlueTooth, they use a connectionless feature of BlueTooth 4. All you need is to have BlueTooth enabled on both devices. There are no settings and no pairing required. See: Get help using Continuity with iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite

Pairing isn't needed by Airdrop either: Mac Basics: AirDrop lets you send files from your Mac to nearby Macs and iOS devices

It also isn't needed for file transfers, as that capability is supported over WiFi, USB cable and iCloud.

Make sure you have compatible hardware. Your MacBook must be mid 2012 or later for MacBooks, for example.

He Lawrence, I am all confused now. I have always used Bluetooth to set up an internet connection via my iPhone when Wifi is not available. Just selected my phone from my Macbook Pro and, he presto, I had a reliable connection for on the road.

This is the functionality I can not get to work ('This Macbook Pro is not supported') after upgrading to both iPhone 6 and OSX 10.10 and I don't seem to be the only one.

Lawrence is 100% spot on. As someone who initially thought I had problems I went back and reread everything. My iPhone and iPad were handing off but not with my Mac. I was also trying to go into my bluetooth settings to pair bluetooth between my phone and Mac. It does't work that way. Despite this being said multiple times people here are still griping that they are unable to pair the devices. Stop trying. They are not going to pair (nor are they supposed to). Also, make sure you have appropriate hardware. This has been listed here multiple times. What I eventually did was log out of my iCloud accounts one at a time (made sure of course I had everything backed up to the cloud). Yes you get this scary popup that asks if you want things erased from your device but as long as there is a backup you should not have any concerns. After you log out of the cloud and log in on each device my handoff and continutity features worked as they are supposed to. Thank you to Lawrence Finch who has been so diligent on this forum in trying to explain to people what they need to do!!
