Time Machine not working with Yosemite

I recently upgraded (clean install) from OS X Mavericks to Yosemite. Before upgrading, I backed up my MacBook Pro via Time Machine on a network server (QNAP.) Yosemite is up and running now, however, I am unable to access folder history via Time Machine. Yosemite recognizes the historical backups, however, when I select a specific date in Time Machine, nothing happens.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

Did not work for me by doing this but eventually weird backup and restore issues I was having 'seem' to get partially resolved. In my case, over three different chats they had me first reset the PRAM on the computer (did not work), restart in Safe mode and test (did not work), verify and repair both the permissions and the disk (did not work but I took the opportunity to verify and repair my external backup disk as well). The final step they recommended was a complete reinstall of Yosemite over the Internet which I did. That seems to have done the trick as now when I enter Time Machine from the Desktop I can go back to different incremental backups and restore a specific file.

Other issues with the Time Machine software in general however are still flakey and need fixing badly. For example I still have to be on the Desktop to enter and use the Time Machine - being in any folder makes it break; if I try to enter Time Machine with the Macintosh HD window open on my ACTIVE Desktop (when I am using a dual display setup), it is broken - clicking on any incremental backup folder in any window merely takes me back to a different incremental backup window with Restore greyed out. Doing the exact same thing but with the open Macintosh HD window on the secondary 'inactive' display gives me full access to backups and restore button!; even tonight I noticed that when I went into Time Machine, several of the incremental backup windows in the middle are greyed out and unavailable. If I restart computer they reset themselves again. I came across other things as well but too long to type it all here.

Suffice it to say that I have to thank Apple for their help to get it 'working' to this point but they still have some work to do. I will be sending feedback to them for sure.

Hi.

I think I'm experiencing problems with time machine/yosemite...time capsule.

My time capsule has heaps of encrypted space left on it...1.86TB to be excact.

If I'm not backing up my mac to time capsule using time machine and manually as soon as I've moved/added/deleted/pre-deleted/mac cleaned and checked for app/system/software/flash...etc updates then an incremental backup will kick in shortly thereafter anyway so what I'm saying is my macbook pro-ret mid 2012 is always at home sitting about a foot and a half from my time capsule connected via thunderbolt adapter/ethernet always getting backed up to time capsule and isn't on a home high speed broadband wifi(DSL)network as i have a videophone 4G pocket wifi network so the time capsule is more or less just my back up solution.....and its better than not having none whatsoever.

Before yosemite(Mavericks) i didn't have to always click on finder icon in dock then click shared(My time capsule) to manually connect to it after it failing to connect/find the disc automatically after from just clicking on the time machine icon in toolbar....then click back up now.

Like I've said I only use a time capsule soley for back up drive/set and forget and don't use any other USB type portable/fixed backup drives/discs(but should still consider one as a 3rd alternative as such!)....for important things like photos,my music files..wavs...etc.....

Anyhow when using mavericks i also noticed i could access the backup.d folders all with dates affixed to including latest backup and i would also see time machine backups in the finder side bar under devices...i think?

I know one of them is for the MacBooks main hard drive and one for disc in time capsule and in the old time machine app the purple/grey coloured indicators made reference to this as explained in some time machine post i read......but where is time machine backup icon/logo in finder sidebar now?

Why can't i find those backup.d folders anymore...............I just want to see plain and clearly what/where/when were my last backups so i can have peace of mind that it is actually getting backed up because sooner or later I'm going to have to free up the macs main HDD by deleting some stuff as its only 128 GB capacity......but i need to see for sure where these backups are before i do that....and maybe even still before doing that get another portable external hard drive first and back up what i want to to that first....then do another last manual time machine/capsule backup before i free up macs internal drive.

Can you or anyone you may know help explain where these backup folders are/could be now as yosemite just does not show them like mavericks did.

Im not having much luck getting any help/feedback from using support communities as i had hoped for so still left in dark a bit over this.

Thanks

J.

I went to Finder app, selected GO tab, Connect to server, browsed until I found my time capsule and selected Data partition. Then to make it persistent I went to System Preferences,Users and Groups,Login Items,And added the Data drive.

Then on the desktop and finder it creates a drive called Time Machine Backups. Click on that to get to backups.backupdb. Pick your computer and so on.

thanks but that doesn't work for me. I get what looks like the full stack of backups when I enter time machine, and can even select back to previous backups, but nothing opens, nothing responds. I can't "drill down" at all.

The Yosemite upgrade deleted all my notes in the Notes app. I'm hoping I can get them back through Time Machine. Have patience, tadpole? Apple might fix this?

I was one of the original posters on this long running thread on page 1!

Like many others I've found ways of retrieving old files albeit not in the old way of entering the Time Machine domain, and it seems to be frequently backing up as it aways did. What I still am not clear about is are apple acknowledging there is a problem here? It all seems very quite.

Cheers

I noticed yesterday i had a problem with Time machine and my Synology DS214. Glad to read i am not the only one. Got an error on the backup all of a sudden and could not retrieve any of the files. I decided to log out and in again on the disk partition... did n't work... just to be save i connected a external drive iOmega, and told time machine to backup on both (alternating)

the new backup did work this morning i could also enter time machine.

What i noticed is when selecting the NAS drive, and then going to time machine it automatically flips back to the desktop... and did not solve my problem.

Then i tried tthu Finder to enter the disk partition... to do that i needed to login in finder to the TM partition...

After that TM started backup as normal... (Where under Maverick TM never bothered me about passwords, after my first and only login when selecting the TM drive in the TM preferences)

For a few days I could have access to the backups by selecting the HD. Suddenly stopped backing up and the following message appeared: "The Time Machine verified all backups in" Time Capsule ". To increase the level of reliability, Time Machine must create a new backup. Click "Start new backup" to create a new backup. the existing backups will be removed. This process can take several hours. "

I canceled the backup.

Since then when entering the Time Machine, Timeline is empty.

Definitely only Apple can solve the problem.

Same issue here. On two different Macs (MBP 2013 and Mac Mini 2012). The MBP has a clean Yosemite install, where the Mac Mini has been upgraded from Mavericks. Each Mac has its own external drive (WD 2TB) dedicated to their Time Machine.

It looks like backing up part of Time Machine works ok. But the problem happens with Restoring files through the Starwars interface (which looks more like a Blurry interface now rather than starwars).

When you enter time machine, the grey arrows that allow you to move back and forth in time to the next modified content are all greyed out, thus preventing me to move back in time to restore deleted or modified files. The time ticks on the far right do not do a thing either. In the other hand, strangely, it is working from some folders like Applications or Desktop, but even there it is weird as the arrow takes me back in time but not necessarily when there was a change in the folder.

Tried to select the Macintosh HD first, then enter time machine, and then navigate to some folders. But it still does not work for me.

The thing is that it does the same faulty behaviour on two different Macs using two different external hard disks for Time machine. I would assume that it definitely looks like a bug. Hopefully there is a way to work around this while waiting for Apple to fix the issue. I know I can use the Finder but it is a pain.

I have only just seen this problem. I tried to use time machine to go back in time for a specific folder and it doesn't work. Only the applications and desktop folders will go back in time. My disk is full of old backups which show on the calendar scroller on the right hand side, but I can't select them. The backups themselves run but I cannot get to their contents in time machine.

When I upgraded to Yosemite I noticed that I have started to receive a message in the system log, don't know if this is significant :-

02/11/2014 09:11:07.659 com.apple.backupd-helper[42]: Attempt to use XPC with a MachService that has HideUntilCheckIn set. This will result in unpredictable behavior: com.apple.backupd.status.xpc

Does anybody know if Apple have actually acknowledged these time machine issues? Not being able to restore backups is a very serious issue and I'm shocked that Apple have not fixed this as one of their highest priority issues.
