wifi keeps dropping since Yosemite upgrade

Since upgrading to Yosemite, my previously-stable (with Mavericks) wifi connection keeps dropping. I have to click the wifi icon and re-select my network every minute or two. I have turned off bluetooth and uninstalled/reinstalled wifi and my networks. I have rebooted multiple times. No luck so far. It appears that others are having similar problems. Any solutions at this point?

Hi ..

Might be corrupted network preferences as a result of the upgrade.

Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder

Type or copy paste the following:

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration

Click Go then move all the files in the SystemConfiguration folder to the Trash.

Restart your Mac.

See if that makes a difference.

Your Mac will generate a new SystemConfiguration folder for you.

Hi,

before 10.10.2 I thought "ah, poor guys that are suffering from those WiFi problems..." and was happy. Now my rMBP13 is acting up and I don't know if my yosemite has contracted the same disease.

I'm connected to the latest and greatest 802.11ac cisco corporate Wifi. Going through most of the same next hops when connected via ethernet doesn't show a problem, neither does going through a Fritz!Box at home. Neither does a Win7 box connected to the same WiFi show any problem.

So it has to be something between my mac does not like about the WiFi environment. I've now switched off Bluetooth and Handoff after setting bluetoothCoexMgmt to Hybrid. Nothing changed.

When you talk about 'WiFi dropping', do you mean that the actual air interface goes down? The four quarter-circles going grey and blinking again, searching for a network? So to speak, you lose the physical layer?

Or do you mean that the Wifi itself stays connected, but nothing goes through, that no IP traffic is possible?

What I'm seeing is that my Mac intermittently can't transmit. 0.1s pings to my next 4 hops get lost either periodically or all together for 5 to 60 seconds. Of course no other traffic goes through at that time.

So I'm wondering if I have the same thing as you do, so I can do nothing but wait. Or if your drops are more of the the physical layer kind, in which case I have to get down to this myself...

thanks a lot

simon

PS: attaching a screen-grab of my 0.1s pings. It was like the left side for about five minutes, the net was mostly usable. Then the right part started happening again, and is constantly happening since five minutes, rendering the machine unusable.User uploaded file

Hi

I also have this problem. I tried all suggestions, even calling support to no avail. Then I looked at my routers log and it was having issues renewing IP's. So what I did was reserve the mac address of my imac NIC on the router and gave it a static IP and so far no dropouts.

Hope this helps some people.

Still strange though why it only happens for my imac and not my macbook or ipad's.

I've had this problem with my iMac which I've had for over 3 years now. Wi-Fi drops out during downloading of a large file (say a movie) and I need to disconnect and reconnect to the wi-fi network. I've been through various OS in that time from Mountain Lion to Mavericks to Yosemite and I've had the problem with each version. I've tried absolutely everything you can think of. You name it, I've tried it, I've even had to sign NDA's with Apple when they have sent me un-released patches which were supposed to fx the problem.

Yesterday, I finally found a solution and my internet connection is now stable: Turn off wi-fi and connect a cable from the iMac to the router. This has not gone down well with my wife as we now have a 25m long cable running through the apartment but it really does fix the wi-fi problem 🙂

Are you saying we should not use laptop and Ipad at the same time? Even there is a family using? That does not make sense. That is not what we call good user experience. I would understand if there was a bluetooth connection between them also... For a hub they are two different machines, two different MAc addresses. If laptop goes bad because of Ipad vicinity then we should expect a patch immediately.

I know it is not good. It worked for me once then stopped and went back to disconnecting every 30 seconds the next day. But now i just click the wifi connection icon every second for thirty or so seconds and voila...it stays connected. Not sure why but it works. It now works with my other devices turned on as well. I just keep clicking on wifi icon every second for thirty seconds or so when i connect and it works like normal.

Since the 10.10.3 update I had the same Wifi issue. My connection kept dropping intermittently and I would have to reconnect using the connection icon at the top-right corner. This was driving mad and I tried multiple proposed solutions without any good results.

As it turns out, I'm using a very old DLink routers that only work in the 2.4 GHz range, and therefore only have 11 channels to choose from. I also have the ISP modem setup close by with Wifi enabled (working with 2.4 GHz as well).

The DLink was setup manually in channel 11 and this seems to be the cause of the intermittent drops as the ISP modem was also setup in a similar channel. I changed the DLink router to work in channel 6 and so far my internet connection has been holding up very well.

So please try to change your channels to either 1, 6 or 11. Explanation of why you should select channels 1, 6, or 11: http://www.extremetech.com/computing/179344-how-to-boost-your-wifi-speed-by-choo sing-the-right-channel
