Apple TV cannot connect to iTunes library on MacBook Pro after upgrade to Yosemite/iTunes 12

Does anyone else have this problem?

After upgrading my MacBook Pro to Yosemite / iTunes 12, my Apple TV cannot connect to it's iTunes library anymore.

I have tried the following:

Logging in/out of Apple TV and MacBook Pro's Home Sharing/iTunes account

Turning on/off my wireless router/modem

Turning on/off the Apple TV and MacBook Pro

A combination of the above

Nothing works.

Is this a bug or am I to wait for an update to Apple TV?

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

You are not alone. I have had this issue today too and tried the same troubleshooting steps you did. When selecting the Computers app on my Apple TV, I get an error message says "Could not connect to" my library. I have two Apple TVs and both give the same message. However, it's only my mid-2011 iMac having this issue. My Macbook Air, which is less than a year old, is communicating with the Apple TV normally.

This suggested solution worked for me without having to take other, suggested steps. 🙂

If one is having a connection issue (after installing Yosemite) between iTunes Home Sharing, on the Mac, and Apple TV, attempt this simple, renaming step of one's Computer Name within the Sharing pref found in System Preferences.

[ ℹ Note: The Computer Name is not the same as the "name" one gives the hard disk, which mounts on the Desktop. So, one's Computer Name, as seen in Sharing, can / should be different from the hard drive / device name as seen in a Finder window Sidebar.]

BTW, I have always had Printer Sharing On and File Sharing Off. ...I did not change either; only did the change to Computer Name.

It's a bummer Yosemite caused this issue, but once fixed through this workaround, Home Sharing between one's Mac and Apple TV should remain solid. ...I'm using 10.10.4; so, I'm hoping they're no issues with further Yosemite updates or with El Capitan.

This is the one that worked. I recently did a clean install of El Capitan and I was going nuts trying to figure why my iTunes Library wouldn't show up in my ATV.

I agree with crumvoc ... very odd of Apple to put this into two different places.

1st is under: iTunes -> Preferences -> Sharing- > Share my Library on my local network

2nd is under: File -> Home Sharing -> Turn on/off home sharing

I tried most of the solutions in this discussion to no avail. It turned out to be a problem with the iTunes library, and what finally worked was rolling back my iTunes library to a previous one. I used the instructions here, though you could also start iTunes using option-click and tell it to construct a whole new library, if you're willing to deal with the hassles that go with that. FWIW, I'm running a 2012 Mac Mini with El Capitan:

  1. Close iTunes
  2. Head to your iTunes music folder (usually username > Music > iTunes)
  3. Drag the iTunes Library.itl file from this folder to your desktop
  4. Open the Previous iTunes Libraries folder
  5. Find the most recent iTunes Library[DATE].itl file. Drag it into the Music > iTunes folder
  6. Rename the file iTunes Library.itl
  7. Reopen iTunes
