OSX Yosemite Wifi issues

Hi there,

I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss.

Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet.

Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.

It didn't seem to have fixed my wifi issues, either. For well over an hour after installation, it worked great on the automatic settings - until it didn't.

Just switched to the manual settings (manual DNS + hardware settings, one of the many "fixes" suggested which had assured that I'd be able to stay connected for varying amounts of time,) I'll see how long this lasts...

All in all, unfortunately, 10.10.1 doesn't seem to provide a real fix on my mid-2012 MBP.

Update didn't work for me either, my problem is different than most of you guys are having. Mine runs fine until I close the screen and let it sleep, when I reopen the screen, wifi works for 5 seconds and then it drops, I have to turn off wifi and turn it back on, after doing this 5 -8 times it starts working fine, until the next time I close the screen this is ******* me off real bad.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012)

Yosemite 10.10

Linksys WRT1900AC - running 2.4 and 5ghz networks (Currently on 5ghz)

Changed Keychain Access on my wireless networks to 'Allow all applications to access this item' (Keychain Access > [double click your SSID] > Access Control > Allow all applications to access this item.

I saw this potential solution a previous post and tried it - It has worked for me. Haven't dropped wifi for about 18 hours - longest run yet. Won't be updating to 10.10.1 anytime soon based on comments I've seen up this point.

As I expected, no fix from Apple and it will take a while before they resolve it. Because of a specific security encryption Apple devices are not the easiest to connect to WiFi network, however magnitude of the problem created with the Yosemite install is scary. I have house load of Apple devices and from this moment will always have a fear of installing anything new from them. As for now my problem seams to be resolved after spending $200.00 on the new Air Port Extreme and I'll not update Yosemite until Apple finds the sure fix.

Alas, this too is merely a temporary fix. Among many.

Well, yesterday I've unvoluntarily had an Apple person or -bot remove a post of mine here. Twice. Worded slightly differently on my part, so as to exclude possibly offensive language or terms.Thought I'd let it slip until the release of 10.10.1, see if that would bring any relief here.

Seeing it did not, I feel compelled to repeat the gist of my story: I suspect the culprit of the issues in this topic to be com.apple.kpi.libkern (14.0.0)

BTW: does Yo 10.10.1 carry a newer version of that Yo 10.10.0 library kernel?

You can check by opening a Terminal window and typing "kextstat", as most of you will know.

In fear of being rebuked again, I leave the research to you guys...

And barely dare repeat my suggestion you temporarily revert to the com.apple.kpi.libkern (13.0.0) that came with your Mavericks. Making sure you have a solid general backup of course, along with a backup of com.apple.kpi.libkern (14.0.0), so you can easily revert.

This is sparsely charted territory, so be very careful experimenting. And good luck to you all!

Taken from 10.10.01 Official Release !

I DID copy and paste your text to a text editor... AS I figured it would be deleted ;-)

I am going to check what happens with 10.10.01 the next 24 hours before doing anything... I WILL give it the benefit of the doubt that after re-doing my usual network-fix stuff it will be a permanent fix... However, IF the issue re-appears I am going to try your suggestion. And IF it works I am going to report it to Apple via a proper BUG Report...

While being a frustrated user myself I DO feel for Apple in this case. It is VERY frustrating to NOT be able to reproduce and thus FIX a bug in ones software. And we amidst all this network trouble we should NOT forget how great yosemite really is...

I booted from Mavericks today - to use an old app not compat. with 10.10. I was VERY surprised over how smooth 10.10 is in comparison to 10.9. And how awesome it looks. IMO - Yosemite is the best version Apple has yet released. WIFI and Network issues of course being nasty. Just saying, the OS is definitely an amazing piece of engineering !

Thank you Morten James! What happened to my posts yesterday was quite scary.
I DID copy and paste your text to a text editor... AS I figured it would be deleted ;-)
You did, did you? Well, this is my first. Though I know Apple Discussions gets policed, I'm just thinking along and trying to help solve problems. Even if I have no Yosemite compatible hardware. No wrong in that, is there? Just reconnoitering...

That being said, I do feel for Apple too: remember the still unidentified WD/ Mavericks bug upon the Mav release causing massive data loss with some users?

Excruciatingly impossible to replicate. Ouch! Sorry for the offtopic.

Just to chime in; wifi "fixes" in update today did not fix my ongoing issue with wifi connection dropping from the router. Hopefully Apple fixes it soon. Upgraded to Yosemite from Mavericks whenever it was available....wifi connection has been dropping ever since. Never had any trouble prior to Yosemite. I've lurked the thread here and tried many of the suggested fixes..nothing works for me. I have to manually reconnect after "idle" time of ~30 seconds or so. Wifi will come on upon "waking" but will eventually drop. The only way the connection doesn't drop is if I'm in middle of a download or using my logmein remote connection to my work desktop... My other apple devices (all mobile devices only) and any other wifi connections all work fine with no dropped wifi.

My router is a d-link DIR-615, never had any trouble with this router.

How old is your router? My Air Port Extreme was only 3.5 years old and after replacing it with a new one few days ago my network is great. Yosemite has something in the program interfering with some routers. Who knows what it is causing. Apple don't know either, therefore are not going to fix it soon. Try a new router if it works you are the winner if not take it back for a refund. None of the "fixes" will work. I think that I'm the only one on this forum who replaced a router and do not have to deal with the WiFi drops anymore.

Jt,

I have/had/ still have your problem (10.10.01) ., I wrote a script so that it keeps the wifi reconnecting when it drops script keeps me working without too much stress. Try it., it is not a permanent fix just keeps you working while waiting for the next update from apple. Its written up here, https://docand.com/news/33975/osx-yosemite-wifi-monitor-restart/ there are no adverts on this site, its just a place to put it. If it helps please say so so I know it helps on another system.

Clean installs of Yosemite on my MacBook Pro and iMac resolved the wi-fi issue a week ago. Interestingly and I had not thought about it until now but during a previous OS upgrade a couple of years ago, I started having problems with my Airport Extreme router, replaced it with a new one and the issue went away too. I am going to keep both Macs at 10.10 for the time being as I have not heard anything positive about yesterdays "fix" release.

Nov 17, 2014 11:41 PM in response to gregtx2

Clean installs haven't worked for me at all, intact this machine had a clean install of Yosemite on it to start with,

I'm seriously thinking about giving up with Yosemite, I wouldn't exactly say that the OS is of merchantable quality - good job it's free!

I wonder just how many millions of dollars have been wasted due to this bug?

I used to advise all my clients now to upgrade to the latest version of Windows, looks like in the future I'm going to have to do the same with Mac OS X.

Apple should know what is wrong, look at is this way....It worked with Mavericks, it doesn't work with Yosemite - so what has been changed? Take the code back to basic level and add the "features" one by one until it breaks.

And also test with other APs than your own, not everybody has an AirPort Extreme.
