MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) freeze with Yosemite

Obviously we have a problem. For the time being, can we figure out which kexts are responsible for graphics switching and just use the ones from Mavericks?

I've the same problem. Disabling the card switching definitely works but this is no long term solution.

@pbcoder: You might want to check out this thread. The GPU crash mentioned in this topic is a GPU Reset, where the mouse pointer can still be moved but the screen freezes. You seem to have a GPU Panic. If your mac goes completely black, chances are you are experiencing hardware issues (per the other thread)

@Blizzke: I'm having both issues, freeze where I can still move the mouse cursor and complete crashes where the screen goes black. I'm mentioning this here because I think they're somehow related since the issues started right after updating to Yosemite.

Just to add, while running without Flash means the system has stayed up for days rather than having to reboot every day, Yosemite ran out of memory. Safari was using 34GB. No, you haven't read that wrong - 34GB!

I'm quite impressed that it was still able to run up to that point as my other machines with Windows 7 running Firefox would crash at 3GB, and even with Waterfox (a 64-bit version of Firefox which I'd recommend) is ok up to about 5.5GB.

No, there isn't much we can do. I think using old kexts (drivers) is our only solution until apple fixes it.

I don't think old Mavericks drivers will help, I've got the same problems with Mavericks. The problem now occurs to much more users because Yosemite is switching to the discreet gfx much more frequently than Mavericks.

By the way... If you are experiencing very sluggish graphics even while on discrete, it seems an SMC reset helps.

(Although I'm not thinking that I perhaps should try doing a shutdown and a reboot and see if that helps. Perhaps it is "simply' a memory leak of some sorts that cause the graphics to gradually slow down).

In any case, the MBP responds normally again for now and since I've locked it on discrete, no more GPU resets. But as stated several times already: That is not a long term solution.

I tried the hint „reduced transparency” und the accessibility options. This does the trick

I had to turn that off the first day.

The graphics don't even move when that is enabled (a bit exaggerated but you get the point)

Anyone else have black corners around the volume dialog with the reduced transparency?

Seems as if they made a booboo with that option there 🙂

Bump - having this issue as well. I can't work, as I need to reboot my mac 20+ times a day. Apple needs to fix this asap.

Kinda liked the newly added transparency effects, but of course your macbook still needs to remain usable. For me it literally is my source of income so yeah...
