My MacBook pro is stuck on "setting up your Mac" part it's been over an hour now.

This happened to me yesterday. I have a MacBook Air and after downloading and installing Yosemite, it was stuck on "Setting up your Mac" all day.

I eventually got in touch with Apple Support and resolved my issue in about ONE MINUTE. Here's how:

1. Power down the computer.

2. Plug the computer into a power source.

3. Press and hold the following three keys simultaneously: Shift + Control + Option.

4. While still holding Shift + Control + Option, press and release the power button.

5. Release Shift + Control + Option.

6. Power on the computer.

My computer booted to Yosemite and I've not had a problem since.

I had the same problem with my Mac Mini, the install would do just fine but then at the setting up your mac screen it stalled for hours. (Literally, I gave it overnight to finish up). It did that twice, (I even installed from a flash drive and formatted my hard drive)

So just to test something, I reinstalled OSX Yosemite and skipped all the sign into my apple account stuff. Instantly my mac was ready.

So for me the fix action was to skip all the sign into my apple account. Maybe that will help you all.

Nevermind, I did a test reinstall with Yosemite on the same Mac Mini with a different 500GB hard drive, and it hung again even skipping all of the icloud/apple account setup. I thought the drive was bad, but I was able to Install Ubuntu on it and it works flawlessly...

I guess I am going to put Mavericks back on the Mini.

Thank you so much for this. I had the same problem on an iMac 24. I recently a hard drive crash on my iMac 27 with significant data loss (thank the Lord for Time Machine backups). I have to admit, I was nervous following the advice of a user thread vs. just calling Apple, but I decided to live on the edge and go for it. Totally worked for me too! THANK YOU!! 🙂

Power down the computer, Press and hold Shift + Control + Option simultaneously, press and release the power button and release Shift + Control + Option (after I heard the chime) and my system came right up.

The Long Story:

My iMac would not boot up, it would get stuck on the grey (or white) screen after the Apple and Progress Bar screen.

Three days of Safe Boot, Recovery Mode, Disk Utility checks/repairs, Single User Mode, resetting NVRAM (formerly known as PRAM), and IM'ing with two different Apple Geniuses (they were very cool, BTW).... produced no results. Finally I had to wipe my HDD and reinstall. THEN.... I got stuck on the "Setting Up Your Mac" page just like the original post, for about two-plus hours. By then I was at my wit's end.

So thanks again! 🙂

BTW, just to make sure, I just ran a Restart and everything booted up just fine!

So this Control + Shift + Option would be like a hard reboot?

I'm having the same problem while upgrading to the OS X El Capitan from OS X Maverick.

Can the same be done in my case?

No damage will be done to my files, or to the upgrade itself?

It worked in under 30 seconds and booted to OS CAPTAIN immediately! Thank you.....

This part seems to be quite slow, doubly so if you have a lot of files.
