Yosemite Battery Drain

I have been using Yosemite Beta for about a month. My battery drained incredibly fast using the Beta. I suspected battery issues would improve after updating to the public release of Yosemite yesterday. The issue has not resolved, however. Just in the last minute and a half of typing this question, my battery percentage has dropped 3%!

When you update, you get the notification that you need to optimize your mac to prevent excessive battery drain, but there is no description of how to optimize within Yosemite or on the web. How does one optimize their mac for Yosemite?

Apple, get on this!

MacBook Pro (13-inch Late 2011), OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Solution:

like many others in this thread, I have reverted back and I am back to normal as far as for battery life is concerned. Do the same, do not spent time goofing around forums.

General comments:

1. despite how hot this topic is I do not see any article anywhere in inzines or magazines

2. I hope Apple is not taking the route of Windows where every second version is usable yet is fixed over the OS release which is complete rubish in cycles of
two years.

3. Lesson learned - never ever upgrade your OS without general google check " issues with new OS X 10.x" or "issues with OS X update 10.x.y"

I too am having extremely reduced battery life on my macbook pro retina 15" that's less than a year old. Went from 7-8 hours on Mavericks to 4-5 hours on Yosemite. I'm running 10.10.1.

I URGE anyone with this issue to call applecare and politely ask them to escalate to a senior advisor who can submit an low-level request for technical assistance to engineering. This will get it on their radar IF a lot of users report it. If not, they may have no idea. Engineering doesn't have time to pursue the forums.

How the **** have you been able to downgrade ?

I mean i tried twice yesterday to use that thing with cmd and R with the recovery system thingy and reinstall OS X and it reinstalled with YOSEMITE !! I've had my MBP for 4 months now so i was using it with mavericks at first. And it never asked me to reinstall with mavericks. And of course i didn't make any time machine save to roll back on it.

It's literally driving me crazy, having only 5 or 6 **** hours of battery is just not possible. Not possible to work.

If i made a mistake trying to reinstall OS X tell me, but i swear they only asked me to reinstall 10.10 and not 10.9

Thanks in advance if you can help me in anything

Love.

Command R (otherwise known as Recovery) reinstalls the last version of OSX on the machine, in your case Yosemite. You want Command Option R (Internet Recovery) which will reinstall the version of OSX that was on the machine as new.

How lord... are you serious ?

Do you know if by any chance i'm going to lose all my datas or i need to make a backup ?

Btw i heard or have read before that it seems to cause some troubles like some files and words or PDF that have been made on YOSEMITE could not be used on Mavericks.. is that true ? if so i'm gonna have to stick on that ****** yosemite

thanks dude!

You should always have a backup, disasters don't send you a notification first.

Make a backup, then reinstall.

PDF files and similar will not be affected, I am not sure about iTunes and iPhoto libraries however. If they were upgraded for Yosemite then they will need some attention.

If you had made backups none of this would matter, without them you are not in control.

Make one now!

Just want to stop by and say, I've revert to mavericks and after a few shut downs and resets (plus reseting the SMC ) battery back to normal.

So mavericks ain't good looking like yosemite, but at least there's not bugs and everything working perfect.

I'm not going to update to yosemite at least until 10.10.3-4 , i'mma keep watch this thread tho'.

good luck guys.

Hey moheny,

Can you tell me how many times you needed to shut down and reset (including SMC resets) before your battery went back to normal? I have performed all the various resets and permission fixes once and my battery life is better, but not all the way back to what it was. I actually did a clear install of Mavericks, formatting the drive and everything, but it seems that Yosemite is like a bad habit that keeps on giving. Everything has improved, performance, no lag and no crashes of my key programs like Yosemite. The only thing that is still not quite up to par is the battery life. Any tips you can provide to me and others trying to recover from Apple's substandard latest offering would be very appreciative.

Thanks in advance!

Cheers!

@Brown_sugar

I can feel your frustration since I've had the same issue.

I've only did a few SMC, but I think what's fixed the problem as stupid as its may sound is to to drain the battery completely, and then shut it down

not reset.

then reset the SMC, charge your mac again to be full and repeat the process again ( I only did it twice) .

try to shut it down often since closing the lid still keep things in your memory.

it's took my mac 3 days to become what's it's use to be.

in my class today, without wifi and 60% brightness I get 10:30 hours :-) .

update me if it's work.

Ok now, I did this test too and I guess I cannot see any problems... Any help here?

Problem description:

Battery life is drained fast. Fully charged Mac Book pro Retina late 2013. I plugged it in this morning, it showed 99 percent and calculated time to full charged was 0:32. When I pulled the plug and reconnected it, it instantly went to 100%. Compared to Mav it drains batterie life almost at double speed.

Ok now, I did the test too and I guess I cannot see any problems... Any help here?

WHAT IS IT GOING TO TAKE FOR APPLE TO EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE MUCH LESS FIX THIS PROBLEM?!?!?!......We are coming up on almost two months since the release of Yosemite and there have been an overwhelming number of issue for many users. Even after the recent update though many of us are still experience SIGNIFICANT battery drain issues. I've done everything by the book and I have tried every fix I can find. As of right now my 18 month old MacBook Air gets less than 3 hours per charge and the fan runs almost non-stop. From a troubleshooting standpoint it looks like the Mail program is the biggest culprit. Realistically this problem is even larger as many users who leave their computer plugged in most of the time do not even know they have an issue. It is absolutely unacceptable that we are getting no help from Apple! Even if you go to the Apple store itself the best they can offer is to reinstall Mavericks.
