Yosemite Battery Drain

I have been using Yosemite Beta for about a month. My battery drained incredibly fast using the Beta. I suspected battery issues would improve after updating to the public release of Yosemite yesterday. The issue has not resolved, however. Just in the last minute and a half of typing this question, my battery percentage has dropped 3%!

When you update, you get the notification that you need to optimize your mac to prevent excessive battery drain, but there is no description of how to optimize within Yosemite or on the web. How does one optimize their mac for Yosemite?

Apple, get on this!

Audii,

I went back through whole process again and found the same to be true! After doing a disk repair/SMC reset/PRAM reset the Mail programs CPU usage drops back down to normal. It will be interesting to see how long this lasts for though. It is completely irresponsible that Apple has not so much acknowledged this, there is clearly an issue.

But as most users of Yosemite (me included) have experienced no change at all since upgrading it is clearly not a general issue but one linked to the machine it is installed on, and obsolete software still installed from earlier versions of OSX.

CSound1,

You make a significant assumption about my situation based on absolutely no information as a way of proving that the problem is an isolated one. The flaw in your thinking is that my machine contains no after market software and all of the apps are up to date. I am also not the only person experiencing this issue as this thread and others contain countless references from other users with very similar experiences. You post provides absolutely nothing of value and would only seem to serve to somehow blame the problems many of us are having on the user versus Apple. Additionally you fail to take into account the multitude of people on this and other threads who have taken their machines to Apple to be told the only option is to uninstall Yosemite.

Dec 2, 2014 7:09 AM in response to Csound1

To the contrary, I have proactively sought out and tried any solution I can find! Your response does not make any sense though as you offered no suggestions in to resolve the problems. You jumped to the conclusion that the problems we are experiencing must be attributed to outdated software on our machines and I simply pointed out that there was no aftermarket software on my machine and all of the Apple apps are up to date. There has been no resolution proposed that is being avoided. I am at a complete loss to understand the point of your comments as they contribute nothing to this thread.

Hi Csound1,

I did an EtreCheck but I can't seem to figure out what the problem is. I would appreciate it if you could take a look at the report and let me know if there's anything I can do to resolve this issue.

Do you really not understand that I disagree with your assertion that there is a system flaw in Yosemite that is causing excessive battery drain.

How can you not understand that I do not agree with you, seems very simple to me.

Dec 2, 2014 7:43 AM in response to Csound1

Girls & Boys !

There's nothing you can do, the best you can is to call apple and complain about it so they will know there's an issue.

Yosemite is not compatible like mavericks.

I can tell by working with Eclipse, Xcode, Photoshop and even Safari.

It's just draining the battery, don't even try clean install since it's going to be the same results.

the best you can do is to roll back to maverick and forget about Yosemite for the next 6 month since ( I'm just guessing ) it will take them time to

fix it.

it's clearly an software issue, and believe me, I've tried every and any fix on the net, nothing work ! waste of time.

I'm using maverick more than a week I forgot how amazing it is, Everything work , battery life is back to 8-10 hours, no need for the slow

OS Yosemite that barley move .

Ahh the last bastion of the insecure, pick a fight! I am not going to dignify the comments directed at me with a response. As for your position, I do understand it but it is simply absurd. In the face of the countless number of users of this thread and others who are experiencing this issue you simply dismiss us although your only attempt to explain the issues we are having does not hold true. Further, as evident by Apple's own update for Yosemite and the ongoing work it has asked of the development community, the problem has already been recognized by the company (albeit indirectly). The facts are: my MacBook Air worked perfectly before the Yosemite install, it had a host of WiFi and battery issues after the install, the machine has no aftermarket software installed on it.

Hi guys,

I just called Apple and the guy on the phone told me to try to reinstall Yosemite again, after having rested PRAM and SMC, not from a USB but from the recovery partition. I just did that and after the installation was complete, it seems like I no longer have the issue. I have been downloading software, transferring files from my hard drive disk and everything only on battery for the last 20 min and I'm still at 100%, showing 8:24 of battery left on my rMBP Late 2013. To write this with my previous installation I would have lost 4%.

I'm hoping it will remain that way but apparently it seems to be solved. I'll re-write here in case the situation evolves. Anyway, I still do not know how, but it is the first real change and piece of solution I've had since the Yosemite release...

Dec 3, 2014 12:11 PM in response to wesfromOK

Hello all,
How can I downgrade to Mavericks? I searched around the net a little, and most of the resources are for a backed up mac, but apparently I don't have any backup and plan to install a fresh copy of last version of Mavericks before Yosemite. So how can I do it? I appreciate if anyone briefly explain or suggest any links that I can rely on.
Thanks in advance,

Dec 3, 2014 6:14 PM in response to staywatchful

If your system came loaded with Mavericks you can. Instead of the standard CMD R at startup you would need to hold Option, CMD and R. This will force internet recovery where you can wipe your drive and downgrade (or in this case upgrade) to Mavericks.

As usual though, don't forget to make backups etc as all your data will be lost.
