Yosemite Battery Drain

I have been using Yosemite Beta for about a month. My battery drained incredibly fast using the Beta. I suspected battery issues would improve after updating to the public release of Yosemite yesterday. The issue has not resolved, however. Just in the last minute and a half of typing this question, my battery percentage has dropped 3%!

When you update, you get the notification that you need to optimize your mac to prevent excessive battery drain, but there is no description of how to optimize within Yosemite or on the web. How does one optimize their mac for Yosemite?

Apple, get on this!

I don't understant what are your trying to say.

these are the facts :

Browsing with Maverick can last 7-9 hours

browsing with Yosemite can last 3-5( 5 max) hours.

So you can turn it all around, flip it as much as you want, theres is an huge battery differences between the OS's using the same activity.

please do not let excuses go up your mind.

I hope the new 10.10.1 version going to fix it, still waiting for some answers.

VincenzoON-

I’m glad you were able to get some help while speaking with AppleCare Reps. Unfortunately, I have to disagree with the concluding information that the Rep gave you. I have a 2012 MBP w/ Retina Display 2.3GHzCorei7 with 16 GB of RAM, that when running Mavericks, was able to utilize the full display resolution at 2880x1800. While doing this, I could run Logic9, Safari, Mail, and iTunes while playing music, and still have a battery life longer than 8 hours. Now with OS X Yosemite, as beautiful as it is, I cannot make it beyond 2 hours using Safari. While using Chrome, I can make it 4.5 hours.

I have done the resets and even looked at the AppNap monitor, made the changes, and thus no results. It’s quite bizarre. When I sit in class and use Safari, my computer spins on the fans nearly at maximum power to cool down the very hot internals. Battery suffers, and after quitting Safari, I have actually seen the percentage amount increase along with the estimated time remaining. Of course running more apps will require more power, but as I said earlier, I ran multiple apps before that use significant processing power and experienced fantastic battery.

Whatever load the Rep told you yesterday evening about the “apparent” battery drain is inherently false, or may in fact say that Apple doesn’t believe there is anything wrong—which I find extremely alarming. This thread and others like it continue to grow full of temporary fixes that never end up working. If yours does, great, but mine still has not.

From Mountain Lion through Yosemite, Apple has touted power efficiency in every June Keynote Address. Why would they neglect power efficiency in Yosemite? My base now is…If Apple does not fix this, then I am more concerned with making it through my classes with a “portable” laptop rather than fight for wall space every 90 minutes.

Nov 4, 2014 12:46 PM in response to wesfromOK

I am having the exact same problem as everyone one else. My mid 2012 MBP was working perfectly fine, even while running Yosemite, up until last weekend when the battery indicator started showing 0%, even though it was fully charged. After a couple of hours it turned back to it's normal self; however, yesterday morning, the battery indicator was now showing that it was stuck at 19%. I tried doing a couple of SMC resets to see if that would fix anything, but with no luck. While this was happening, I had my Mac plugged into the outlet (of course, especially while doing the SMC resets), but when I unplugged it, it automatically shut down...I replugged it and it started up like normal. It was absolutely weird! Then I unplugged it again to see if it was just a mishap, but no, it shut down again...I have absolutely no idea why it's doing this. And the battery indicator is still stuck at 19%...Later this week I'm going to take it in to Apple to see what they can do about it, if they can.....

Nov 4, 2014 5:11 PM in response to reganh

Hi reganh,

I'm sorry to hear about the issue that you are having with your new OS. (back when I was attending classes, no one carried a notebook PC to a classroom but only a programmable handheld calculator, which was fully solar powered -- no worries about the battery power...)

Anyhow, I think there could be two issues here:

[1] a possible software "bug" on the 'Remaining Time' indicator, which fluctuates too much, in that it is defeating the purpose of "accurately" reporting the available hours/minutes of usage (maybe that is why this version of OS does not have an option to show the available power in terms of 'Remaining Time' but percentage value, to avoid confusion.)

[2] the slow network connection, possibly due to a software "bug" in the way that this new release of the Yosemite OS is handling the data -- I am still testing on the rate of battery drainage while I am using Wifi. I would think transferring loads of data via Wifi would require lots of battery power. I will post an update here if I find out anything unusual.

In the meantime, I would go to a classroom 30min before the class start and find a seat near the power plug / outlet in a classroom-

All the best-

Nov 4, 2014 6:13 PM in response to ilankofromcolombo

It appears that I have resolved this issue with my computer after calling into apple care.

I reset the SMC and PRAM.

When I first turned the computer back on it said that I had 100% battery but only 4 hours of battery life remaining so I got frustrated and called them back up.

However, my "time remaining" has kept jumping up by 10 minutes every few minutes and my % is still at 100%. I went from 4 hours left to 7.5 hours left in about 10 minutes and it still keeps climbing.

Hope this helps a few of you!

btw. in the time it took to type this I am now up to 8 hours left..

Nov 5, 2014 2:27 AM in response to wesfromOK

Whoa..so many variables clouding this subject. Very difficult now to judge each example as we do not have vital information about the 'real' battery states of the complainants.

For starters using the indicated percentage and runtime is not really any help. Hardly scientific.

As a guide to those planning to make some sense out of this I suggest compiling a definite list of the variables as a comparison against fellow users.

Consider these, and make notes, age of MB, model, processor, ram, drives, ssd or spinning.

Surely, the only really (nearly) surefire way of checking on Yosemite's handling of battery maintenance would be to partition a drive, load Yosemite on one Mavericks on the other. Now run a test such as, wifi on , loop a youtube video at the same time loop a desktop and wait till everything dies. Repeat the whole thing again, this time no wifi ethernet instead.

Hold it right there...you can see where this going.

Lets just throw the in issue of recharging, how have Apple decided to deal with the charger and its role in the latest OS?

I would like to know how are users are charging their MBs, plug in. power up, use, reach indicated full charge then unlpug.

Or...now I believe this is important, plugin, don't power up ...then how long do you allow for stage 2 saturation?

I wonder if using the MB plugged in and fully charged the MB behaves as a parasitic load thus confusing the charge cycle by triggering mini cycles?

Do users leave the MB plugged in when not using it? Again is the MB behaving as a parasitic load here?

Is it only me? my iPod, iPad 'seem' to charge more quickly...do I mean that? or is it just that the charge indicator shows 80% within a few minutes.

Do we actually know what is happening to the charge state of the battery and its where it is in its four stage charging cycle.

I have now noticed this on the MBP, I am wondering if Apple are implementing a different charging 'protocol' to existing batteries and charging systems.

We all appreciate that a full charge is not ideal for a lithium system. Anything thing that can remove the possibility of trapped ions and cell oxidisation is good.

Maybe a rethink of the four stage charging cycle has been tried, lets say the charging system in MBP has been 'reprogrammed' to cut off at a lower threshold in Stage 1 say 80% but the Stage 2 saturation phase has been extended or even removed. If so this certainly would help to prolong the service life but at the detriment of the runtime.

What is that users have been most concerned about over recent years? battery life? runtime? whats the difference? now is that really service life or could it be that the battery is fine ...just that the charging methods had changed so it is perceived by the user to be failing.

Could it be that the consumer has little knowledge of the behavioural difference between primary and secondary cells? so treats them much the same.

I would like to see users posting the actual power information of their particular MB.

Easy to find out, open About this Mac...System Report...Power

Now copy and those details about you battery into a textedit page, do some work reopen System Report and check on the battery info.

For example:

Charge Information:

Charge Remaining (mAh): 3179

Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 5354

Health Information:

check ten minutes later....

Any thoughts on this?

Nov 5, 2014 2:48 AM in response to wesfromOK

Same story here.

Brand new Macbook Air 11", Yosemite 10.10 (now 10.10.1...) .

I did a clean install, and I'm usign the Air only for typing with Pages, rare web browsing. The typical battery life is about 3hr and 10 minutes (from 100% to sleep).

If I look at the battery drain, it shows a constant -1657mAh even with everything closed and display backlight at half, no USB connected, nor thunderbolt. I'm on WiFi.

It looks a bit too much for an idle machine...

Since I am having the similar issue, I am posting my etrecheck report here for better understanding. Moreover, I am having a finder issue as I cannot open the 'documents' file from anywhere. Whenever I click on documents the finder gets hanged and I need to relaunch. I tried disk repairing at startup and also the safe mood reboot several times. The problem never solved. This is freaking me out! Please help!

Yes I appreciate the need for caution, no worries, nothing to lose at the mo'...its a third party pack...three old, not bad but could be just a coincidence thats its reached the end of its service life as Yosemite lands...fascinating things batteries.

I am performing a deep discharge in order to fully reset the discharge/ charge flags...I am guessing the MB does not have this built in as some devices do. I have done twice so far (192 cycles) one more time should'nt harm and will at least remove any tracking errors accumulated from short time discharges which can confuse the fuel gauges.

As in previous post I am wondering if the charge cycling method has been altered, I have a couple on standby anyhoo.

How do i get rid of the red ones? Is that the objective?

Nov 6, 2014 1:34 PM in response to javier_fuentes

... went through all post now.

resetting SMC or anything else did not solve any battery drain issue for me.

just figured out, that somethng points to apple mail!

I've configured 3 mail accounts in apple mail 1 Exchange, 2 IMAP accounts.

Running in battery mode, my MBP (retina, mid 2013) fans often runs in high speed mode!

Battery percentage goes down nearly 1% every minute!!!

Closing apple mail ... everything seems to get back stable again. no high speed running fans, battery percentage goes down in expected way.

Not sure if mail app is the only "killer" - but as a fact: there is something strange in yosemite (just in term of looking at battery life/drain)!!!!

Hope an update is solving this issue - don't think going back to Mavericks is an alternative, knowing apple brings new OS every year ...

Nov 8, 2014 7:22 AM in response to wesfromOK

after upgrading to Yosemite, battery drains fast - can stay on battery for 1:30-2hrs max. No high CPU or battery consumers in active monitor. Just browsing in safari. As soon as going on youtube or so the battery goes down even faster. Coconut battery = good.

Can anybody be so kind and help me to solve it? Otherwise I think I will revert back and upgrade only after things like this are solved.

Thanks!

sure - every laptop comes with a fan ... but the thing in Yosemite is, that the fans of my MBP-retina is running very often in high-speed mode, wich is

a) very noisy and b) a 100% different behavior than in Mavericks. Installed Yosemite on inernal Flash drive - same disk than Mavericks but different partition.

This means Yosemite installation has been done from scratch and it is nearly just the blank OS image (additional MS Office 2011 and Parallels 10). In may case

battery drain is going much faster than in Mavericks - no matter regarding opened Apps (just thought Apple Mail is the power consumer - but it seems that it

could be something else too ...)

I'll "switch" back to Mavericks now ... Will give Yosemite a second chance if there is patch or any update fixing the battery drain issue ...
