Yosemite Battery Drain

I have been using Yosemite Beta for about a month. My battery drained incredibly fast using the Beta. I suspected battery issues would improve after updating to the public release of Yosemite yesterday. The issue has not resolved, however. Just in the last minute and a half of typing this question, my battery percentage has dropped 3%!

When you update, you get the notification that you need to optimize your mac to prevent excessive battery drain, but there is no description of how to optimize within Yosemite or on the web. How does one optimize their mac for Yosemite?

Apple, get on this!

Have been reading online almost daily trying to find a "cure". Massive battery drain. Did reset SMC and PRAM, kinda worked immediately as I got 6 hours vs 3 hours after migrating to Yosemite. But still only half of the 12 hours on maverick. After standby and wake, the battery is back to 3 hours again on 100% charge. This SUCK! and the fan is constantly on. Activity monitor states cloudd constantly on above 75% CPU???

Here my report, hope it makes sense to someone out there. Thanks.

I don't understand how apple approve this kind of update with so many users having battery drain issues.

they didn't check it before they release it ? people have been formatting their HDD again and again just to check if the new Yosemite system continue to drain the battery and wasting their time, why apple developers they didn't check it?

I'm coding with xCode, and before I upload an App I check it for like 3-4 weeks just to be sure i'm not having bugs.

This battery Issue is killing me since I travel a lot .

Nov 1, 2014 10:51 AM in response to wesfromOK

Guys,

We all are experiencing the same issue and nobody knows what could solve it as of today. I know it is very annoying and that this issue should have never existed. It is more than likely than this issue is software-related and that a fix will come from Apple in the next days/weeks or so, so please wait for a solution to emerge on this threat or somewhere else and stop posting "I have the same issue" posts; this threat is getting out of control. Some of us are following the problem but getting confirmation ten times a day that others are experiencing the same problem is not helping. Unless you are posting something you believe would help everyone here while waiting for the fix please just stop posting about your issue because everyone here knows it.

Thanks a lot!

That said, I went to the Apple Store and as expected, they couldn't fix it after running a lot of diagnosis tools but at least they confirmed it was not a normal issue given my hardware and the fact that my rMBP late 2013 is in perfect shape. The guy at the Apple Store was very comprehensive and wrote a full report of the issue and sent it to the engineering department. Again, that's an issue that is most likely to be solved in the next update, probably during the course of this month or December.

I am having the same struggle. The battery life is SIGNIFICANTLY shorter. I have started to look into going back to Maverick but can't quite figure out how. My Mac is early 2011, and every update has been fantastic and the computer has worked like it is brand new. Until Yosemite. Complete battery drainer - 100% to 34% in 1.5 hours with no significant CPU drainer. Give me my reliable computer back! Help!

Nov 2, 2014 6:40 AM in response to moheny

I Upgraded my MacBook Air to Yosemite 3 weeks before and still my Battery Drain Issues continues.

I tried all the options including SMC & PRAM but nothing worked.

Activity Monitor keep pointing Safari take huge CPU.

Then i find one trick that worked enough to get back some amount of Battery : that's sign out from iCloud

Navigation : > System Preferences > iCloud - Sign out if signed in.

Still I am researching to gain back my Battery power 100%

Nov 2, 2014 7:25 PM in response to wesfromOK

My less-than-a-week-old Macbook Air 13in (Early 2014; Refurbished) with Yosemite (OSX10.10) is also showing odd battery usage % value. A while ago, the remaining battery was showing "56%" with the remaining time of 1hr 46min. At "51%", the remaining time was 4hr 46min. Now, it is at "50%" and the remaining time has increased to 5:07... 5:17... 5:47...5:57... I don't know what is happening. I will give the AppleCare a call tomorrow evening. I am not sure if this is a hardware / software(OS) issue.

Nov 3, 2014 3:32 AM in response to wesfromOK

UH oh..yes same issue. mid 2009 MBP retrofitted with new battery pack (1 year) / SSD/ maxed ram and even removed the DVD drive. Pretty good battery life with Mavericks.

Battery tests all look good, but as reported, charges fast? or at least shows that. However dies very quickly.

I wonder if Yosemite does not like non OEM components going into the platform? fan control on non 'Apple' SSDs ? batteries? RAM? I apprciate hardware management systems from original builds may still expect original equipment to be fitted.

what u think?

Nov 3, 2014 5:31 AM in response to wesfromOK

Having the same problem...rapid battery drain on my Macbook Air since upgrading to Yosemite. Its terrible.

Hardware is as follows:

Model Name: MacBook Air

Model Identifier: MacBookAir6,1

Processor Name: Intel Core i7

Processor Speed: 1.7 GHz

Number of Processors: 1

Total Number of Cores: 2

L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB

L3 Cache: 4 MB

Memory: 8 GB

Boot ROM Version: MBA61.0099.B16

SMC Version (system): 2.12f143

Nov 3, 2014 6:05 PM in response to audii_fortessimo

Resetting PRAM & SMC did seem to have helped with the fast draining battery issue...

I have been testing battery power drainage since this morning. After the resets, I have charged the system to 100% and let it drained by only using iTune playing the same song over and over... (NOTE: I turned off the Wifi.) Only application that was running was iTune (Activity Monitor App. shows everything else was asleep but iTune, while the machine was running offline). Now after 12 hours, it is still running and the battery indicator tells it still has 50% juice left with 12hr power remaining.

I think the key here is to turn off Wifi / iCloud and applications that you don't really need to be running in the background.

Slowness of Wifi connection is something else -- I will continue investigating on this...

As soon as I connected to Wifi, battery power started to drain very quickly.

Nov 4, 2014 5:00 AM in response to audii_fortessimo

Hi,

I asked the high-rank technical support personnel of AppleCare last night, and have come to understand the cause of this "apparent" battery drainage. It all makes sense what they explained to me, although the RESETS did seem to have helped improve the system performance.

The % battery usage indicator shows how much of the "physical" battery power left on your Mac. (NOTE: The % value does not go up but ONLY down, as the system uses its power.)

The Time Remaining indicates how long you will be able to keep running your Mac with the current setting -- it all depends on which applications are currently running in the background. Open the Activity Monitor Application (Search it on the Spotlight), and open the Energy tab -- you can see which applications are taking a nap (App Nap). If you close/kill the applications that are using significant amount of energy, the estimated Time Remaining can go up. If you start more applications and processes (such as connecting an external HDD to your Mac or connecting to Wifi and up/downloading large files), the estimated Time Remaining can go down.

According to the technical support, the way OS X manages its power has changed significantly since Maverick, and even more so in Yosemite. I hope this helps to answer the mystery of "apparent" battery drainage. I am still keeping an eye on this, however. (Let me know if you notice any real cases of slow Wifi connection on Yosemite. I did the network configuration file reset [I found the method online] and am currently checking for any improvement after that...)

Cheers-
