Yosemite Battery Drain

I have been using Yosemite Beta for about a month. My battery drained incredibly fast using the Beta. I suspected battery issues would improve after updating to the public release of Yosemite yesterday. The issue has not resolved, however. Just in the last minute and a half of typing this question, my battery percentage has dropped 3%!

When you update, you get the notification that you need to optimize your mac to prevent excessive battery drain, but there is no description of how to optimize within Yosemite or on the web. How does one optimize their mac for Yosemite?

Apple, get on this!

I just got off a very long chat with apple support during which I was transferred to a supervisor who advised me that my usage of the computer was draining the battery (I'm getting approx. half of the 9 hour battery life). He said it was probably because I use Skype 4-5 hours a day (some audio, some video) and leave it open to receive calls. He said he couldn't tell me what battery life to expect with my usage. They don't test with apps not made by apple. Does this sound accurate? Does Skype cause excessive battery drain?

Oct 24, 2014 7:17 AM in response to Khun-Maalee

Me too... Problem is back after restarting the computer... It only solved the issue (very) temporarily. Only getting 1:40 at 61% of charge, this is non-sense.

I am going to perform an entirely clean install of Yosemite during the weekend and will come back on the topic to let you guys know how it goes... Hope Apple will release an update and solved that issue...

Definitely I'm going to reinstall Mountain Lion from scratch. In my opinion this is by far the best Apple OS because it's stability, looooong battery life, look and feel and memory consumption. It has the most important and useful functions of Yosemite excepting tabs in Finder, notifications widgets (not important at all for me), and continuity new function.

The problem? You have to pay for it: 18 $. Why that price? Because it works perfectly. Why Mavericks and Yosemite are free? Because they aren't as polished and perfected as the prior. Perhaps if you buy a new mac just now Yosemite will work perfectly because it might be optimized for these new models, and not for previous computers. Another problem with ML is that perhaps you don't like the old visual style of dock and windows, but that's not my case. I recognize that in a 21'' screen Yosemite looks excellent and have a great performance but in a small screen I prefer the old style.

I have been testing Yosemite since the official release, and at the beginning it had poor performance in my laptop, high memory usage and low battery life, however I solved it partially doing the following:

* Firstly backup your system with Time Machine to be sure that you will be able to return to your actual state.

* Clean startup items that you don't need and remove programs that you don't use at all.

* Disable every widget from the notifications area and in System Preferences

* Disable bluetooth, wifi and external devices (HDD, etc)

* Disable transparency

* Start in safe mode (pressing Shift on boot).

* Repair disk permissions

* Remove sleepimage file. From terminal type: sudo rm /private/var/vm/sleepimage

* Try the steps in the article (reset SMC, etc): http://www.imore.com/how-resolve-battery-life-troubles-your-retina-macbook-pro

* Disable app nap. This is for optimizing memory but if you have memory enough (8Gb i.e.) you'll save battery life if you don't fill the memory all the time. Do this from terminal: defaults write NSGlobalDomain NSAppSleepDisabled -bool YES

With these steps my laptop works almost fine, fast and stable, not as good as on Mountain Lion but I have a decent battery life of 4:15 hours on my MBP 2009. With the elder OS with no optimization I have 5 hours o even more, which is very important for me.

Hi everyone,

So I did a clean installation of Yosemite and I still have the battery drain issue (at least my computer is faster for other reasons obviously).

Apparently most of the threads I've read say we need to wait for the recalibration of the battery and for spotlight to finish its indexation. They also say that after one or two days, the battery should get back to normal. Has anyone experienced that?

I'll give it a week and see how it goes...

Hi guys,

So I contacted Apple Support since after a week I have had no sign of improvements. They asked me to run a system diagnostic (when just after starting your computer you press and hold the D key) and I have a message saying "Your battery may not be charging correctly" when the battery is charging.

I tried again with the battery full and no error message. Anyway, I am bringing my computer to an Apple Store tomorrow; they believe it is a hardware issue... But for you guys maybe you should check the diagnostic tool to see if you get the similar error message.

Oct 30, 2014 10:40 AM in response to Alex_lveb

The issue on my computer comes from using Safari. Actually, Chrome is no better. And unfortunately, the idea that it is a hardware issue CANNOT be true. If it was, then none of us on this thread would have issues suddenly occurring once upgrading to OS X Yosemite. This is a bad software release that I sincerely hope Apple is working on diligently. When not using Safari, my battery lasts close to 8 hours (or so estimated). When Safari is running, now and since the last time I posted on this thread (7 days ago), my MBP Mid-2012 w/ Retina Display is lucky to make it to a full 2 hours. This is just as bad as all the Windows PC’s around me. I’ve tried resetting PRAM or whatever as someone earlier suggested, but have had no luck in a lasting fix.

This has been an issue long enough. Apple, please fix this.

—your loyal customer.

Reganh,

Just trying to help everyone here; I inform you about what I have done so you wouldn't have to do it and waste the time I've wasted. We have no feedback from Apple and nowhere on the Internet will we find the answer at the moment...

I know that it is unlikely to be a hardware issue considering the fact that everyone has experienced a battery drain after upgrading (including me). Whatever the issue is, it seems like it has also damaged my battery since I have this error using the diagnostic tool. Furthermore, according to the app called Battery Health, I used to be at 98% of capacity on Mavericks and now it tells me I am at 92% (IN ONLY TWO WEEKS!!).

I am just encouraging you to see if you have the same sub-consequent hardware issue, maybe due to the software issue causing it. I'll see whatever they have to say tomorrow at the Apple Store, and if problem unsolved, I'll go back to Mavericks so that would definitely solve the problem for sure until further information on that issue solved on Yosemite...

Came back to Maverick, MBP late 2013. got my 12 hours on 100% back. Like new OS, but it does not make any sence to loose 50% of battery life with it. Apple should fix it... otherwise no go for Yosemite...

P.s. Even erasing disk and clean install Yosemite just eats my battery. So for last week, got my mbp reinstalled three times. Have never had that pain in a butt before... what is going wrong with Apple...
