Yosemite Battery Drain

I have been using Yosemite Beta for about a month. My battery drained incredibly fast using the Beta. I suspected battery issues would improve after updating to the public release of Yosemite yesterday. The issue has not resolved, however. Just in the last minute and a half of typing this question, my battery percentage has dropped 3%!

When you update, you get the notification that you need to optimize your mac to prevent excessive battery drain, but there is no description of how to optimize within Yosemite or on the web. How does one optimize their mac for Yosemite?

Apple, get on this!

wesfromOK, since this thread has degenerated into the predictable mess of conflicting and unhelpful replies, you would probably be better off mercy-killing it and starting another. Unfortunately, the deluge of "me too" replies means your question is likely to be ignored.

Post a new question and include an EtreCheck report of your system. The unhelpful answers posted thus far point to all the usual suspects that have resulted in poor battery life for every OS X update since Jaguar, at least.

Sorry John Galt for not posting in a new thread. For some reason, Apple support said I didn't have permission to post or edit such content.

Here is my report from EtreCheck. Do you or anyone else have any insights into something I can try to recoup some battery life?

Problem description:

Significant battery drain using Yosemite compared to battery usage on Mavericks.

Safe Mode eliminates the possibility of third party system modifications or software being the direct cause. If it still drains rapidly it is possible that a corrupted OS X installation is responsible, in which case you can reinstall Yosemite from the Recovery Partition or OS X Internet Recovery. Doing that does not erase any of your User account information or data, but a backup is recommended anyway, as a precaution against the unexpected. Also, should third party software be responsible, selectively restoring essential data from the recently created Time Machine backup – while omitting nonessential or potentially incompatible software – is an option.

It is also possible, though unlikely, that a hardware fault is the reason for rapid battery drain. Some hardware-related causes can be fixed easily with an SMC reset. Other hardware-related causes are possible. In any event observing the results of booting Safe Mode will advance troubleshooting.

I have the same problem too with my macbook pro retina 2012. I only can get 5 hours max from full charge battery usage after upgrade to Yosemite. Im using Mountain Lion previously and i can get 9-10 hours battery usage from full charge battery. Is this normal or maybe the battery need to calibrate when installing new OS? I should just stayed on Mountain Lion instead of upgrade to Yosemite. Anybody got any ideas?

Oct 22, 2014 4:30 AM in response to wesfromOK

Hey guys! I am having a battery issue after upgrading to Yosemite as well :S The Battery drains a lot faster and what's worse the battery health went down from 96% to 94% in an hour!

Hello,

after install Yosemite i have one problem with the icon battery.. I disabled the battery icon in (shows battery status in the menu bar). When I reactivated the battery icon, not show when it is charging and viceversa. Also, now the battery icon is shown before the wifi icon and no after the wifi icon..

I have the MacBook Pro 13" retina display

Any idea for this problem?

Regards,

Andrea

I just "upgraded" to Yosemite on my MBA (early 2014) last night after I upgraded my iMac (late 2013) the day before. Loved the interface and fresh new function on the iMac and didn't notice any issues so I went ahead and updated the MBA. To my horror - my battery drains in 3 hours flat. I simply couldn't believe my eye as I have been enjoying the pre-yosemite battery life on Maverick of 12 hours. What should I do?? I have no 3rd party software running as I know. The MBA is my work laptop and therefore only licensed software. Can someone help with suggestions on what I can do to claim back my battery life? My MBA is also considerably hotter then before.

Many thanks all!

Same thing for me, I performed a rollback on Yosemite in order to recover a correct battery autonomy.

I don't know how if it has been tested internally, but it seems that the battery autonomy was certainly not the priority to deliver Yosemite ...

I am definitely upset to buy a product at 2 times cost of a PC and see that a such important point was left out, getting a lot of users loosing their time in upgrading to Yosemite and then downgrading to Mavericks.

If the OS is not ready, just keep it as a beta not as an official release !

wesfromOK, as I feared would be the case I'll have to unsubscribe from this thread. The signal to noise ratio in this thread has made it impracticable for me to give your question the attention it deserves.

I encourage you mark this question closed, and post a new question. I will make it a point to look for it.

As I wrote, this unfortunate situation is an inherent limitation of this support resource, and is not your fault.

Same issue. I have a mid-2012 first gen MBP with Retina Display. Until upgrading to OS X Yosemite, I had zero issues and only in firmware updates have my fans actually switched on. Now, the fans activate like clockwork, my Mac heats up very quickly, and as I am typing this, I have lost 4% of battery life. I shut down the Mac last night while plugged into Magsafe 2 at 100%. In thirty minutes, my Mac has lost 27% charge. My total battery life has been estimated at 2hrs 14min from a 100% charge…at minimum display brightness.

As beautiful as Yosemite is, this is ridiculous. And yes, before anyone asks, all apps are up to date and third-party applications do not actively run regularly, if at all. Safari is shown as the largest user of power.

Please help, Apple!

Apple OS department is worse and worse..... I've experienced the same too after upgrading to Yosemite my 2014 macbook from 9-10 hours now only last 3 hours ... I turn on my macbook with screen off, I lost 20-30% in 40 minutes .... worse battery ever....

Not only on OSX it also happened to my iPhone 6 plus .... with the upgrade 8.1 now the battery only last 6 hours (from about 10 hours) .... my iPhone 4 is better with iOS 7.04 it can last 8 hours.... my friend's Samsung S5 only lost 20% battery in 4 hours ....

Why the upgrading made every battery in Apple products worse and worse .....
